(hope i not step on anywun’s toze hoo’s favrit song dis iz) bein imprisoned as i wuz, i culdn’t take appropriyut evasive akshun such as runnin skreemin frum ten ruum an puttin owt my eerdrums wif a hot poker. so all i culd do wuz fink ob cyoot bebbeh otters, tehn wen teh hi-jeenist’s fingers wuz removed frum my mouf, i sed, i hated taht song 35 yeers ago an it haznt gotten any better sinse tehn. tehn she aksed me hoo sings it.
dont kno hoo, but i fink taht wuz tehr only song. fankfully.

“Seasons in the Sun” had been written in French in 1961 under the title of “Le Moribond” (The Dying Man), by Belgian poet-composer Jacques Brel. In 1964, it was translated into English by Rod McKuen and recorded by Bob Shane of the Kingston Trio. Although that version didn’t sell well, Terry heard it, and the tune remained in the back of his mind [where it probably should have stayed, huh?]. When the Beach Boys called and asked him to supervise one of their sessions, he had them cut “Seasons in the Sun,” but they refused to released the finished track.
