Seerius nowt: I rescued 6 adult cats and 14 kittens that had been abandoned - some during a thunderstorm - in a neary park. Seeing drenched kittens, barely with eyes open, huddling in a crack in a brick nearly killed me. Although the apartment rules said “no pets”, over time I smuggled every last one into my apartment, dried them, picked the fleas and ticks off by hand (too young for the most part for any medicines), and provided for them until a friend who ran a no-kill shelter for cats (and dobermans) could take them in. Two were so young, I had to feed them by eye dropper. I was locally known as the Underground Kitten Railroad.

My advice on getting to snorgle a kitten is to let it get used to you, feed it, and every so often get a treat - a cheap (and that’s important) can of salmon or tuna. Empty the can on a cleanish piece of ground and step back. Don’t give the kitten too much, as excessive fish is not good for them. This should be an irregular treat. Then start playing with the cat at a distance. A long line of wool can make for a toy the cat can play with without getting closer than it feels comfortable with. The cat will let you know when you have passed its inspection.
