1) The fawn (Jet) is very much alive and healthy. His momma was unquestionably, visibly, and undisputably dead.

2) The first thing my sister did after her husband brought Jet home was to check with wildlife rescue. The local rescue was overrun with animals, and (as she lives on 4 acres with a neighbor who has nine in a protected area) gave her the option of raising him.

3) She is a trained medical professional, and immediately asked about proper diet, nutrient additives, and how to feed him as he gets older.

4) Jet is already showing interest in the wild deer that roam her neighborhood. Right now he wears a breakaway red collar to show he has been hand-raised, and when she gets off call he will be given a permanent bright orange ear tag to show that he was a hand-raised deer and not as afraid as he should be of predator species.

5) If he does not make the transition to the wild, there are plans in place for his long term welfare (including a fenced 90 acre spread, a veterinary with a trank gun and appropriate transportation should he outgrow my sister’s place).

6) The veterinary and wildlife rescue are being consulted every step of the way and approve of Jet’s condition.

7) No, it is NOT as good as having the fawn raised solely by wildlife rescue. See #2 above.

No, unless you are in contact from the get go with a vet, have the blessings of your wildlife rescue place, and have made explicit and careful plans for the animal’s future, you should NOT try this at home. Deer are cute when they are 10 pounds. 120 pounders in mating season are an entirely different story.

Mama deer was very messily and gorily dead by the side of the road, peeps. The fawn (Jet) was barely alive. His rescuers checked with wildlife rescue people, who were overrun, and as they have four acres (with wild deer) and their neighbors have nine, in a protected area, they were given the option to raise Jet at home. I might add that both rescuers are medical professionals with a lot of experience.

In general, it is NOT a good idea to just pick up “abandoned” animals, and if it is CLEAR that momma is dead, as it was in this case, it is good to handle the wild animal as little as possible and take it to wildlife rescue. Jet was found on a Sunday, rescue organizations were overwhelmed with animals, and so keeping him alive at home was the best of a series of bad options.
