Thanks for the warning. When I was young I had a very fierce phobia about snakes and while it was never as bad with pictures or video, it always made me really angry when TV programs though up closeups of snakes with no warning.
After some desensitization therapy (both professional and self administered) I have come to really like snakes though I still have a sudden rush of adrenalin when I see one unexpectedly. It’s kind of nice now.
Snakes are one of the most common phobias, probably because an underlying instinctual fear meant to keep us from getting envenomated. A bad experience can easily magnify it into a full blown phobia.
There are a couple of things to keep in mind about phobias:
1) You can not reason people out of them. They have nothing to do with reason.
2) Uncontrolled attempts at desensitization often reinforce the phobia. Some people try extreme desensitization to overload the fear response but not only is this controversial but it should not be attempted by an amateur with a bunch of snakes and a lockable closet.
3) Having fun with someone’s phobia is evil. Phobias can very significantly from person to person. What might make one person stand on a chair and laugh between screaming could give someone else heart damage or shock.

I remember when I was very young and (as of yet) unaware of my mother’s intense snake phobia. Without knowing any warning needed to be given, I showed her a picture of a pretty snake in that month’s National Geographic, which had just come in the mail that morning. She was standing at the kitchen counter, and hit her head on it when she passed out and fell (also cut the hell out of her hand in the process). We were living overseas and I didn’t know how to call the local version of 911, so I panicked for a long time, then went around knocking on neighbors’ doors until I found someone who was home, thinking the whole time that I had killed my mother. Not a great day for either of us. She usually took such precautions as she was able – including having my father fold-over any pages in the National Geographic with pictures of snakes – but when caught unawares, the effect was intense. (She’s much better now, some 35 years later; she can actually be in the same room as a TV program showing snakes, we just have to tell her when it’s okay to look.)
It’s easy, and tempting, to scoff and pooh-pooh others’ fears as ridiculous or histrionic, but in the long run, does it really hurt any of us to accommodate, and to be kind about, someone else’s struggles? Especially in a situation like this where it requires no effort or expense on our part. Thomas Jefferson once said, regarding his lack of interest in the religious beliefs of others, “It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.” (click my name to see a link) I try to apply that same open-mindedness to as many situations as possible – if it “neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg” that an image which would be potentially frightening and disturbing to some is blurred, and requires a single extra mouseclick from me to be able to view it… ya know, if that’s my biggest complaint of the day, I’m doing pretty damn good!
One other thing I’d like to add, it’s not censorship. I understand that there’s a fine semantical distinction and “censorship” is a readily-understood term, but especially in these days of ever-eroding personal rights and freedoms (for USAns at least) I think we should strive to distinguish. By shouting “censorship” at things that are (a) not really censorship and (b) no big deal, we condition ourself to have the “no big deal” response when there IS a valid complaint of censorship.
Censorship, for the record, involves governments, prohibition of certain publications, and punishments for publishing or owning those items. Having to click to see the picture is no more “censorship” than your online email account or banking services requiring you to give your password before you can view your personal records.

A lot of good sense above. I always liked snakes as a kid — loved to hold garter snakes and watch them get warm and docile when they warmed up from my skin. The non-poisonous ones are beneficial; farmers put them in their barns to eat mice.
BUT, in Vietnam I never saw a snake that was NOT deadly. I didn’t have a phobia, but I was damn scared of the critters. We had a Marine bitten by a Russell’s Viper, a snake that is near the top of the list of snakebite deaths.
There’s a difference between a phobia (an unreasonable, obsessive fear) and being scared when confronted with a serious danger.

That’s kind of what I’m thinking. I’ve got a few irrational fears myself that trigger panic attacks, but while it would be nice if there was always a warning about them, there never is. Why does a snake get put behind a cut like that but other things don’t? Who decides? If we cover one thing that might trigger irrational fear-based panic attacks, then we have to cover anything else that might, right? Which could be a lot of things. I once knew a girl who was irrationally afraid of fish. Not on a plate, but live, swimming fish. I never got the whole story as to why, but seeing fish gave her full blown panic attacks. Should we cover all pictures of fish just in case she’s reading this site?
Don’t get me wrong here, please. I would be the last person to say that irrational fears are within somebody’s control and that seeing certain objects can’t cause panic attacks. I’ve been made fun of too many times myself and I really truly hate it. But where do we draw the line? I’m afraid this sets a certain precedent. Snakephobia- Fear of snakes. aka Ophidiophobia, or Offidifififififififiif obeya for the cheesefrens. It’s real. And the warning applied is no different from a spoiler alert on imdb.com or a violence warning on tv shows or a PG warning on anything else, or those silly labels on food items that indicate the food may have traces of nuts in it. It’s about alerting the persons of whom the warning is intended to protect so that they don’t unsuspectingly get themselves into a situation that may be harmful in some way for them. The rest of the viewers/consumers just have to put up with it. Fwiw, I think this site has traces of nuts in it so maybe there should be a warning for that too

A doll artist had sculpted it to go with one of her dolls. It was so cute !! The only way it could have been cuter was if the cat-face was a Siamese instead of a Persian (OK so I’m biased). Be considerate of them and just think that maybe if you were afraid of the boogeyman and there was a site about cats (you weren’t expecting to see a picture of the boogeyman) you would be glad they they gave you a good warning. I’m personally excited that this has an extra click!
I myself am have arachnophobia (extreme fear of spiders)
and the fact that a snake had this warning, then I know the spiders will too.
This would be good for people with the extreme fear of snakes…
Some cases of these phobias expand to just seeing pictures of your fears,
(Such as mine)
And these warnings could save people from having to run out of the room and ask a family member to close out the window.
I speak from experience.

I completely understand the concept of being terrified of snakes. I mean, I adore them, couldn’t love them more and have never been afraid of them a moment in my life, but I AM deathly afraid of spiders and all other bugs(as well as of being stuck by needles), so I can totally understand the horror of that.
but being afraid of a PICTURE…that’s past the point of needing to be a accommodated. yes, I understand the concept of letting something go if it doesn’t harm you but that’s just ridiculous, and letting it go on harms the person with the phobia by reinforcing unacceptable behavior. A picture can honestly do nothing to you, it can’t even move. It’s about as effective as being afraid of a color. So I do think this falls under censorship, and I think it’s ridiculous. But that’s just my opinion.
