We’ve decided to change the date because we are able to. We maded up a holiday. It’s easy to move it. So if it reminds our fish n chips friends of a sad day, why not accommodate them? And since Lolday is supposed to be one of joy and happiness, we want to make sure as many people are able to lol freely without remembering a tragedy on that day. So we give you 8/8. We even looked up the 8/8 date on Wikipedia.

You are supposed to be you. That’s the only supposed that is supposed to apply. If you have happy memories of your cousin being born, then those are your memories and I and my cat salute you for it. (Well, she would, if she wasn’t engrossed in a catnip mouse right now, but she says to pass on the sentiments.)
Respectful rememberence is like on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, London (and many other British cities) go silent for two minutes respect and contemplation. Cars stop in the road. Businesses go quiet. Sports stadia fall silent. We remember, we reflect, and then we go on. Morbidity only profits the undertakers.

I’d say it about another infamous terrorist event, happened – oh – 5th November. Religious fanatics there, too. (And, yes, I’m English. Well, 1/4 Scots, but I’m sure both sides will forgive me for that.) The tragedy of the Icini is barely remembered outside of Norfolk, for all that 20,000 are said to have died that day. Arguably, the two more recent tragedies are a LOT more recent and also arguably a lot more tragic, and maybe the wounds are just too fresh right now, but they’re like scabs – they won’t heal if worried and picked at. Eventually, you have to let go. Perhaps this is not yet the time, perhaps this is not the place (although I can think of no place more filled with loving-kindness and safety, two vital ingredients in healing).
I therefore urge the British to do what we do best – pack up your troubles, have a cuppa, kick back and snorgle a kitteh.

I’m not sure I agree with this (and not wishing to make LOLspace a political thing…) – as a former inhabitint of TTI we never used to mark dates like this – the attacks on Warrington, Canary Wharf, Harrods, HorseGuards Parade, Birmingham or Guildford – we know that they happened and we try to learn from them, but they’re not set in our collective consciousnesses. Do we run the risk of becoming rather American in our thinking? How frightfully undignified.
That being said, if we are to commemorate 7/7 in a meaningful way, what better way than with LOLs? People can visit attrocities on us, and we will retaliate with funny captions on kute kittehs, thus rendering their agenda completely meaningless.

I disagree with you. As a Londoner and an avid follower of lolz I would like to see this on a different day. I understand why they have chosen the day as it looks a bit like lol but to me it has a more important significance. It is the day that 52 people were killed and 700 people were injuried on their way to work simply because they were there. I am not saying we need to become American our thinking and mark every anniversary with a national ceremony but I would like to mark the day with dignity and reflection.

Yeah, I lost my fiance in 7/07. Not really very funny for those of us that have lost people in the terrorist attacks on London. But hey, no-one gives a crap about us. I’d like to see the uproar if someone did something like this on 9/11
The bombings in the UK were very tragic and very equal to what we felt on 9/11. There should be no competitions on who suffered the loss more. Both are horrible. Americans are not as uncaring as some might imagine. We are in fact all human. I am American and am truly sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine the pain and anger you must feel. God speed!
I was about to comment that as a Londoner I would like to see this day moved. 7/7 was a huge deal for all Londoners and most Britains. I agree 100% that if it were 9/11 then everyone would be in uproar. Please have a measure of respect for all those who lost their lives and their families as well as everyone from this great city who felt the loss too and move this event to another day.

Every time somebody leaves a comment disagreeing with the date, we are awarding a small victory to the terrorists who decided 7th July would be a good day to blow themselves up, and to the terrorists who aspire to follow in their footsteps.
As a country, the UK does not stand absolutely still for 11th September, nor does it stand still for 11th March, 29th October, 16th May or 5th August – and they’re just the attacks that come to mind. We afford a tiny two minutes silence for the millions of people that died in WW1, and yet we expect the rest of the world to come to a halt on the 7th?
I love my country, and I know the pain of losing a loved one, but I do not support the glorification of terrorism by giving Al Qaeda et al. an excuse to revel in the misery they caused. It’s a sad day when we cannot move together as a stronger country.. sipping our tea and commenting on the weather, or whatever the stereotype is. Let us spare a thought for those who suffered at the hands of those who’d rob us of our freedom, but relish exactly that: our freedom, and in this case, our freedom to LOL at silly pictures of cats on the Internet.

I think what annoys people isn’t really that ICHC Day is on 7/7 so much as it is symptomatic of Americans not to care about things that happen in other countries. Americans all think the whole world changed on 11/9, and but can’t find Britain on a map. Even if British people don’t think ICHC Day should be changed, one can’t help but involuntarily think “bloody Americans” when we see 7/7 plastered anywhere in big colourful letters. Also I don’t think captioning photos of cats is high on the list of things Osama gets annoyed about.
You point’s kind of silly really – I can’t see how refraining from celebrating the day on which a large-scale act of terrorism was committed acounts as glorifying it. As I say, it would be silly to change ICHC Day now, but having a little sensitivity to one’s users seems like a good policy for a website. Still the best website ever though.

Then I heard the things that Brits on the street said after the States were attacked. Along the lines of “Well, they had it coming, dinnit?” — and realized that the love was certainly not equal. You’ve no call telling us about insensitivity, kthxbye.
perhaps they (the Big Cheezes) could do what they did on 9/11 this year: they had some sort of “moment of silence” down time on the site for when the attacks took place, and then continued on.
re: awarding the victory to the terrorists: if we continue to let them keep us in bondage of bitterness, they then have free reign over our hearts and minds to continue terrorizing us.
IMHO, let us honor and remember those we have lost, but let us continue in our lives, living in such a way that we live free from the very terror they try to put in our hearts.

Here’s the deal. Like it or not Americans, you have a bad image, both from your leaders, and from the fact (yes fact) that the number of Americans who don’t realize that North America is an entire continent and not just the northern US states. The education system is a joke. No child is left behind because they all are. Individually there are some intelligent Americans, but sadly they are becoming the minority, overshadowed by the very vocal and ignorant majority. Those who speak up against the status quo are being shot down as “nutjobs” and “agitators” or worse, terrorist sympathizers. It doesn’t matter what your are speaking up about, if you show any sign of not believing the drivel the US Media machine feeds you, you must be stopped.
This is all being said from a Canadian living in the US. Call me one of the enlightened few.
Now, on to the topic at hand. The date. Well, if you REALLY wanna make a LOL day, make it 1/01. Yes, its New Years day, but that is a true look and it also has no stigma attached to it, and is a true holiday for most of the Western world, so its a good day to enjoy some LOLZ. And the best lolz of all to enjoy? Drunk kitteh! 8/08, while it may be a decent idea basing it on the area code of where it started, really doesn’t do it justice. While I do agree 7/07 is the best “lol look” I wouldn’t want to have the day on any day of significant tragedy, be it 9/11 or 7/7. Of course, given time, EVERY day will have a tragedy associated with it. At least with 1/01, you know that you can always use a dozen other reasons to use it. After all, it was new years (hangover) day for a lot longer.

Interestingly – I think part of the issue was the use of “7/07″. if this had been advertised as being “LOLday on July 7″ I doubt there would have been as much uproar as there was. But “7/7″ is how the world refers to the July 7 bombings, just as “9-11″ is how the world refers to the World Trade Center bombings. Saying 7/07 invoked the date far more than simply “July 7″ would have. In the same vein, Saying 11 September has a whole lot less power than 9-11 or even September 11.

7/7 was a terrible tragedy for us and I am glad the date was changed. A lot of people died, a lot of people who had done nothing wrong. Like most of the tragedies for that matter. I don’t see how a date that reminds an entire country of a terrible event should remain? I’ll wager the owners of this site just didn’t realise and sensitively changed it when they did. This site is about funny cat pictures, not political debate. I don’t believe that American’s don’t care, I think you do and I am touched by a lot of the comments on this page. People seem to be making a deal out of keeping the July date as if ICHC were making a point by instigating the date in the first place! It just spelt Lol! That’s it!
We shouldn’t discuss this any more, there’s not really anything to discuss. ICHC have wisely decided not to associate their website with an attack on a nation. I think there are people here who are just arguing for the sake of aruging. I for one would like to close this now. I am glad the date has changed so we can all truely appreciate the funny pictures. This has shown compassion and done a bit for relations. It’s nice to hear that some American’s genuinely care about us Brits.
