A friend of mine kept rescue cats as well as her own kittehs. This is what she sent me that worked for her. She did this for all her cats to keep them thin, active and interested!
Warning, the above can be messy!

Keep at least two sets of toys of totally different types. Switch them out every two weeks or so. If you have a cat with comfort issues, let it keep one comfort snuggle.
Multi-level play works more muscles. Stairs, cat furniture, even jumping on the people furniture is better than straight-line running. Uses more brain cells, too.
Feed 1/2 daily food at a single daily mealtime, small individual bowls for each cat. Make the cats work for the rest. Play hide-n-seek with the food dishes, or toys that roll and dispense treats will also dispense food. Do your cats like to play with paper? Get a clean, food-safe box and paper, cut a hole in the side, (paw or cat size, depending on the box - make sure cats can’t get stuck) put the food in the box and wrap it with the paper. You may have to show the cat what to do. Coming up with games like this also gives you a mental workout!
Cat grass and/or nip may help control appetite.
If your cat has constant allergic reactions without change of season or any other visible triggers, try changing food dishes. I’ve had two of these, one was allergic to plastic, the other to metal. I now have ceramic or glass dishes, and the cat that was gaining weight due to steroid shots doesn’t have to have them anymore!
Make sure the cat is healthy enough to exercise.
Set up an exercise/play time with the cat. You join in!
