I remember this photo from years ago. It was taken in Germany, and was used to compare the opposite scale of breed sizes. One is of a common draft-style horse and the other a miniature horse. I believe it was in the days before photo shop.

This picture was taken at central park NYC in front of the American Museum of Natural History they had a live outdoor horse exhibit and Thumbelina was there I know because I went there that day.

Good grief… the mini is mutated. “Responsible breeding: you’re doing it wrong.” Look at it–bug-eyed, no hip to speak of, back legs a mess. I feel sorry for it and hope that it is just a freak of nature and that people aren’t actually breeding for this. Miniatures are supposed to be just that: miniatures of full-sized horses with the same conformational ideals.
On the other hand, the light draught (maybe Cleveland Bay?) harnessed looks like a well-built fellow and seems well cared for… though, like most horses who haven’t seen one before, seems rather perturbed by “Honey I Shrunk The Pony.”
Moving on…
Agree…also head is too big for body, and back has a peculiar slope to it.
The draft horse doesn’t seem to know if the other critter is supposed to be a horse or some strange dog.

The horse is indeed “a freak of nature”, she has dwarfism. The breeders have taken both her parents out of breeding because they produced her. Thumbelina herself will never be bred according to her owners. They never intended to breed horses with her deformity, but sometimes two reccesive genes meet, and you get the fenotype. They reacted accordingly, and responsibly by taking the parents out of the breeding pool.

Renn, you spend WAY too much time on the Fugly blog! Thumbelina is indeed a mutant – she’s a dwarf mini. She is 17 INCHES tall and has deformed legs. The owners, who as far as I can tell are responsible mini breeders in Missouri, vow that she will NEVER be bred – her legs couldn’t hold her up. Their other minis look normal to me (although I’m not a mini expert).

Thumbelina was born on May 1st, 2001 on Goose Creek Farms in St. Louis, MO. At just 8 ½ pounds and 10 inches tall, her birth was quite a shock for everyone.
Can’t find any foal pictures, but there are tons of photos on Google image search and there’s also a YouTube video of her.
