I knoe this be the way of naychure, but I haz struggled (az an wildlife sankchuary volunteer) to save these little guys after a cat or dog haz gotten them (cat bites almost always fatal - they haz toxic saliva; another reezon to worship them az our overlords!)

Juz toxic iff dey biet u. When mi kittehz bite each odder (sometimez) deh bitten 1 haz 2 get antibiotics to prevent infeckshun. Odderwize, deh get an absess, which is ‘pleh’. I tink some ob deh kittehz dat ware dose kones wer bitten & had 2 hav absess draind.
Cat saliva haz certain bakteria that iz almost always fatal to birds and small animals when introduced into the bloodstreem (like in a bite. Even a lite bite. Sometimes even a skratch.) By around the fifth day, the bitten animal develops a massive infekshun and dies. Sumtimes can be halted by really strong antibiotics, but death usually happens. So yeah, cat saliva is toxic. Ask any rehabber.

Of course, I let Cookie drink out of my cup, but I alot bigger than a skwirl or chipmonk. (Plus, Cookie, duzzn’t have da bakteria - she haz nano-angels in her saliva…….)

If tehy bites teh hoomans an draws teh blud, it can be bad fur teh hyooman as well. I’ve gotten pritty bad infections from mai kittehs bytes. i canit kownt how manee peeps sai he shud be put daown, butt hez mai babee, and he has teh misplaced aggression disorder.
As he feelz like a people, Aslan thinx he shud do hooman stuffs. I don drink outof a water bowl no more. I doubt he has da bacteria either as he is clearly hooman like.
Mennee kittehz haz teh pleh saliva, but nawt awl ob dem. Ai doan fink it hurtz teh hyoomins as lawng as it goez throo dye-jestiv sistum (sew iz ok for kitteh to dwink frum yer glass) — but iz nawt gud if getz in teh bloodstreem.

We had a neighborhood cat (complete wif hrbls) who put both my Grandpa and my Mom into the hospital at different times by biting them. Grandpa was in for a while — he had gotten bitten by the cat at home while the younger family members were in Vegas. When we got back, his fingers looked like sausages & his hand looked like a Howie Mandel balloon. I think he was lucky to keep his hand and his life. Mom got bitten by the same cat a while later, knew she should keep an eye on the bite, and went to the doctor a couple of days later when the wound showed signs of infection. It got infected even though she carefully and thoroughly washed the bite right after it happened. Grandpa was in the hospital for a couple of weeks IIRC. Mom was in for about 5 days. That was a nasty cat. He tried to bite me once on the calf, but his fangs didn’t get through my jeans, thank Ceiling Cat.

Totally true and pay attention:
In addition, Cats’ dogteeth are very long and comparatively very slender so the bite wound is too deep to wash itself by bleeding out and is nearly anaeroobic. The really bitchy bugs are anaerobes. A penetrating cat bite warrants immediate trip to emergency room - especially a bite wound in the hand - unless you don’t mind losing your hand, or parts of it.

My favorite chippy ‘Nancy’ is back again this year. She will sit on the porch railing and CHIP CHIP CHIP CHIP for wut seem lyk hours. Das why we calls her Nancy, shes the ’squeeker ob the house’. If I go out onna porch she watchs me until I sit down and den she climbs my leg to see if I has goodies. I keep a bag of peanuts and a coffee can of sunflower seeds by the door for muh liddle rodent frenz. I can hand Nancy 3 whole peanuts and she will examine them and stuff them one at a time in her cheeks and run off. She will refuse a peanut with a cracked shell. Back in less than a minnum to do it again, and again and again. We never tire of this game.

Teh red fawx dat comes thru catches skwirls and sumtims birds (mornin duvs mostly) and chippies and we has a red tail hawk dat hunts in my area an I done mynd them gettin some noms outta muh menage … managr … buncha critturs - dats nature, red in toof and claw, no prob. Axually beautifull ina primal way. But ders no need fer a domesticated cat to go out hunting, they don’t hunt to live, dey gots gushyfud an hoomins to cater to every kitteh whim. Stay inside, chase tail, give snorgles. Wanna hunt? Ebbey fall dere are myce inna attic an basemunt, go wild. I luvs de kittehs but I don’t luv ebbeyting dey do.
It might be in a cat’s “naychure” to hunt and kill but cats are domesticated animals and it is our responsibility as humans to manage our domesticated animals and to not let them be unnatural links in the food chain. They are unnaturally occuring predators. Protect wildlife and keep your domesticated pets indoors when you cannot supervise them!

I agrees. All my kittehs haz been indoor-only kittehs. Way, way back before I realized whut culd happen to indoor-outdoor kittehs, I had a couple kittehs killed or seriously injured by cars on the road (and I lives out in the quiet country!), and I had a couple wander off and never come back…..Iz really better to keep them inside. They stay healthier longer, and so duz the wildlife.
An then there ar teh coyotes, teh hunters, teh eaglols, teh poysins, teh wild dawgs, teh traps, teh odder peepl hoo mite pik tehm up an taek tehm hoam if tehy ar frenly - way too menee danjurs!!!
Mine awl ar indoor too. Tho ai am thinking ov taeking Barney awn walks wif mee (around teh farm, nawt awn teh rode, of corse. Ai too bleeve he wud stay wif mee. He ALWAIS coms running wehn ai call him.

Cats are actually not domesticated at all, they are opportunistic and have evolved a mutual co-existence with humans that suits their needs, and you are being naive if you think you can totally tame and control one.
Your idea to “protect wildlife” is a nice, if rather flawed sentiment. After all, the cat was abundant in the wild and reproducing in large numbers, before man came along, kept them as pets and started to neuter them.
I live in England, next to a tidal lake - I’d rather my cats killed the increasing number of water rats in the area, rather than have my cats indoors and the rats in by back yard. Or are rats allowed to be killed ?

I be sad for teh chipmunk, too. I know to hunt and kill are in a cat’s “naychure” but cats are domesticated animals that are NOT natural parts of the chipmunk’s food chain (or the wild bunny’s or the wild bird’s or….) We humans, their domesticators, must be responsible and keep our pets indoors or supervise outdoor play to protect wildlife!

Both are potentially visious and should be controlled when out in public. Ise opposed to declawin and udder forms of mutilations but I fink that they shouldn’t be frone out to wreck havock on muh udder crits.

I don’t agree that it is okay. Muh neighbors toss der big qat out at night and it huts muh birds and chippees and axually came up on my deck an stared at muh budgie one mawnin. I fink that the laws about dawgs oughta be expanded to include cats.

1 ob mai kittehs gotz out and wenz in2 naybors yard. Naybor called animule control who picked up cat. ( She thot cat waz hurt and didn’t noes him) Cat’s county license had run out. I had to pay a fine to get him back, but those peeps were right and mai kitteh and meh waz wrong. County law here says must have license and cannot “run at Large”. They waz such nice peeps that I paid the fine, and the boarding and gave them a donation. Maybe dey saveded mai Ricky from gettin runned ober.

Welcome. iz ok 2 B fired up about things, thats whut commints r fur. Lots of cheez peeps keep thier kittehs indoors fur many reezuns. my stripey brudders were indoor cats n were berry healthy; Joe lived fur 19 yrs n Mike lived fur 21 yrs. they never caught anything but houseflies( tho they did chase around once when a bat got in and flew about)

If yo has a problem wif too man of rodents qats do wunnerful work, go for it. Its lettin then hunt for sport and take out the nawt problem critters I would try to control. I don’t know if it’s possible to have both tho, can you keep an outdoor qat indoors until you needs a killer?
