I didn’t see anyone talking about beating the child – just about stopping it pulling the kitten’s tail. The kitten is clearly in pain and the kid has a firm grip on its tail, so it can’t pull away. The parents should be doing something about that, not taking the time to take a d**n picture.

The people here exclaiming “Teh BAYBEE HAZ NO TEEF!” need to look a little closer at the photo. The baby isn’t just holding the kitten’s tail in it’s mouth, but has actually lifted the kitten’s hind legs off the ground by its tail, which means the baby has a pretty tight, rough grip on the kitten. Moreover, the kitten’s expression–and open mouth–make it pretty obvious that the kitten is in distress.

This is NOT the time to be taking a picture. The kitten is _clearly_ in pain and the baby is liable to get hurt. There is _no_ reason to allow the kitten’s pain to continue or to not prevent the imminent scratching/biting of the baby. The value of object lessons notwithstanding, this is NOT an amusing picture. It is evidence of abuse.

I doubt it went on for long enough for it to be considered torture. They probably plopped the kitten in the kid’s lap for a quick picture and the moment they picked up the camera, this happened.

As someone said earlier in kittehspeak, the little catten and the little person will figure each other out soon enough.

There are much worse abuses in the world to worry about than a 5 second error in judgment that these people probably never made again.

When I was a kidlet, we had a neighbor who was a little older than my parents, and he would always try and shovel our walk, because Daddy was at work, so then we had instructions to get out there and shovel the walk before he did, then he started earlier, and soon we were shoveling the walk before the snow had finished falling. Dagnabbit! we were going to be nicer to him than he was to us! One Sunday (because we were up delivering the newspaper anyway) we shoveled his walk and driveways and our own at 5:00 am.

It doesn’t matter whether the cat bites back or not. If you see a toddler physically attacking another, do you just stand and watch saying “Well when he gets hit back he’ll learn his lesson.”? No. You stop the behavior. The kids may not know any better, and they will learn that they will get hurt too, but you still wouldn’t stand there and watch them beat each other up. So yes, the cat will bite back if it’s pushed past it’s limits, but for it to get to that point without someone stepping in shows that it is being abused.

If a child is being beaten by his parents starts hitting them back, would you condone the original beating by saying “The child defended himself. Lesson learned.”? No you wouldn’t. Because whether the innocent defended himself or not, he was still abused.

From that cat’s face and the fact that it’s hind legs are raised off the ground by the tail, you can see that it is clearly in pain. That is abuse.

i dunno, i guess my parents, for all of their flaws and neuroses were smart enough to assume that if any of our family pets ripped us kids a new one, it was because we provoked the animal and might, as a result of the scratches and small cuts have more sense than to pester the dog or cat beyond the limits of what they would tolerate. object lessons are sometimes the best ones

I Agree with you entirely, thats no way to treat a kitten, the parents should have put the damn camera down and intervened. “Kit-Kat” is probably scarred for life, just like the baby the next time it comes near the cat.
