Here in Gainesville, we have real roaches the size of your head, and they always likes to be crawling on your ceilings in the middle of the night, right over your bed. My kittehz, they go’s nutz, because these smart roaches, they get in a corner where kitteh can’t reach. PLEH!

See, now, I was just having a minor moral dilemma this morning over much the same situation as you see in this picture. On the one hand, I’m a vegetarian, don’t believe in killing things generally, and not particularly scared of bugs. On the other, I don’t especially want them in my house, and when I saw some kind of spider-like creature climbing on my wall this morning, my first instinct was to point to it, look meaningfully at my cat, and say, “Bug! Kitty, look, bug! Get it!”
So… how hypocritical is that, that I don’t want to kill bugs myself, but I don’t seem to have a problem sic-ing my cat on them?

two — I use a commercial mix (dare I name it here) Feline Futures. And lower-fat grocery turkey. I have two that are getting chunky and that is exactly hwy I am doing it.

(Breaks out of lolcat, which is increasingly difficult for me these days…seriously, I have actually been known to start work-mails to fun colleagues with “I can has queshun??”)
I order my meat from hare-today .com, which is a small farm in PA. They ship all over the country and generally everything is still frozen solid when it gets to me in Chicago, even in summer—they ship lotsa ice paks. So I thaw out a 5-lb package of whatever–my kits like rabbit best, though they love pheasant and goat too…turkey and chicken somewhat less (because they’re spoiled little boycats and know their mommy will buy them anything.)
Take the thawed meat, and add 5 1000-mg salmon-oil capsules (poked and squeezed into the meat); 1 400-eu Vitamin E capsule (same thing–poke and squeeze); 200 mg of vitamin B complex (steenky!); 2500 mg of taurine (VERY important–you could also add a pound of ground chicken hearts instead, which they also sell, but taurine is CRUCIAL whether it comes from hearts or pills); 6 egg yolks (raw) and 6 egg whites (cooked–they can’t have raw whites, something about not being able to metabolize something about them) and enough water to make it gooshy. (Generally I cook the egg whites in the water and dump it all in together.)
Take all that, smash it up real good with a potato-masher or a big spoon, and then scoop it into freezer containers. 5 lbs of food lasts my two gluttons for about a week to two weeks–but they’re eating machines, and most kitterz eat less, I’ve been told. To make a full 5-lb batch takes about half an hour, and it’s totally worth it–my guys are GORGEOUS. Silky fur, bright eyes, super-energetic…my old roomie’s cat was 13 when we started him on it, with serious gastric problems and a lot of health issues. Two weeks of raw food and his digestive problems improved, then disappeared…within a couple of months he was running around like a kitten. Seriously. It was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen.
I think raw food is definitely worth the effort, and I highly encourage all cheezfrendz who has kitterz to give it a try. My cats are extremely pleased.

I jes mix da meat, water an mix an freeze in 2 oz gladware thingies and thaw overnight and it is EASY! I bought the kitten mix as it has liver and no fiber (they use psyllium). I have lost my last 6 cats to digestive issues and guess what? They all ate commerical, “prescription” foods. NO MORE.

I yusta chop up peeple leftovers inta teensy small pieces an mix w/gushyfud. Yoo mite try leftover springbeans, brokly, a tsp ov cooked rice, a tsp of plain yogle, n stuf like dat. I fink if dey eats grass frum teh lawn, den veggies cut up bery small shud be OK. I also yusta put a teensy pinch of garlik powder on gushyfud once in wile becawz I herd it helps keep away fleez.

looks like the brown “German” roach which libs in cities, like Boston (and nyc), which are, in fact, adept at climing walls. We here in OK sometimes get bigger, darker wons that look greasy, but they are mainly outdoor bugs: but sometimes they come intoo my garage. I’ve heard that there’s gyant flying roaches in S.America. Then there’s the hugh “hissing cockroaches which peepz sumtimes keep 4 pets. Roaches will sumday take ober teh whirld.
