BTW, tenterhooks is from the fulling and dying industry; after the cloth was woven it was dyed or treated and stretched out on big hooked frames in the fields or other open spaces as the last process in making the cloth – it was wool and linen and all sorts of everyday cloth, not just canvas for painting. The “tenter” bit refers to the stretching rather than just the hanging up (where “tent” comes from) and so tenterhooks means suspense with a bit of an edge.
