    • Cookie's human says:

Saw show on History Channel about how vinyl records are made – and I’m thinking, like, yeah, back in the tyme of the dinosaurs (of which I’m a proud member!), but they said more vinyl records are being produced now because people feel the sound quality is better than a CD, and MUCH better than an MP3!!!!!!! Wasn’t the supposed sound quality improvement why everyone was convinced to change over to CDs 20 years ago????? (plus, vinyl never worked well in computers….or in cars….

      • catalogical humor says:

There may be more vinyl produced now in terms of absolute numbers, but not in terms of percentage of market which has grown since the 70s.

The sound issue is complex. In the early days, vinyl sounded better because engineers did not know how to optimize for CD. Eventually a properly engineered CD could match or exceed vinyl. Now, the problem is overcompressing the dynamic range (the “loudness” problem). You can create a radio-friendly supercompressed range digitally in a way that vinyl could not withstand. (This is not talking about digital MP3 compression.) This means new masters of some albums can sound worse than the original vinyl release. Not because of CD limitations but because of bad judgments by record producers and engineers. A CD can still sound as good as vinyl today but it is likely to be by an independent artist and not one targeting the popular mass market.

        • SJ says:

The other big attraction of CDs of course was that vinyl may sound fabulous at first… but then wears out eventually (and is easily damaged). You can spill your Ribena on a CD and it will still play (suggest you wipe the sticky purple juice off first however).

        • Cookie's human says:

Wow! Thank you for taking the time to explain – AND in user-friendly words! Of course, we all know that the music industry will come out with ANOTHER device that will have BETTER QUALITY SOUND!!!!!! and convince us to church all our CDs and CD palyers……

  27. Bakane says:
