I volunteer at a wildlife clinic and rehab. center, and have helped raised baby squirrels too! It’s fun (but we try not to snorgle them too much so we can release them after they grow up). We get an occassional black baby squirrel (incredibly cute)!

I know Akron area (in Ohio) haz black skwirrlols, rond Kent State Unibersititiy. Dey are verrry qute, but MEAN to de obber skwirrlols.

Once ai waz on a bus trip to Canada on which were several Aussies. They all got excited about a gray squirrl, gathered around, took pictures, watched it for a long time. The res of us thought, cute, but big deal! Its just a squirrel! THen one of the Ausssies told me that, with all those unusual and unique animals in Australia, ther aren’t any squirrels! So they are quite a novelty. I guess a koala is the Aussie equivalent of a squirrel

I tried to Google “black squirrel” and this got me a Wikipedia page which talked about how black squirrels are normal grey squirrels but with more melanin.

They’re supposed to be pretty common in parts of the Midwest. (USA, Canada.) The trouble is, all of those just looked like normal grey squirrels (cute little ears) but with black fur. (Nosing around Google’s image section also got me white squirrels and even what looked like a black and white squirrel but all with those same durn cute little ears.) Hokay, so… I tried “Long eared squirrel.” That got me a BBC page which does, indeed, show squirrels shaped like the one pictured here. (Spock ears.) hey are called “Abert’s squirrel” or “tassel-eared squirrel”.

But those squirrels are grey with white on the chest. They come from Western North America and stay up in the trees where people can’t see them. Maybe some of them are black like otherwise regular “grey” squirrels sometimes are?
Wikipedia also says there’s something called Kaibab Squirrel which are supposed to be black (looks sorta dark grey to me) but have (cute, very bushy) white tails.
