I love this picture. The soldier is brave and strong. Kitteh lives in a civil war, when animals are often on low-end of totem pole. Soldier is warrior, serving his country in far-away war zone. Kitteh is looking to adopt someone; both kitteh and soldier exchange a little warm and fuzzy; good for both of them. Good for all of us. Hoping both in picture are still doing well.

Serious idea intrusion alert! If you are allergic to pets, but want to give a homeless pet a home, consider sponsoring someone else to get a pet. Many people cannot afford the up front cost to rescue a pet, but can afford the day to day costs. Then, maybe the new kitteh parent can email you pictures and updates. Just a thought, in honor of the joy Esme has brought me in the last 6 weeks.

This is long, but I needed to write it. Something someone said in the “Queen’s English” comments has helped me finally pinpoint what it is about this place that has kept me coming back on practically a daily basis for the past six months.
As background, my regular online communications for the past decade have been with two groups of amateur humor writers. While the demographic composition of each differs slightly, they have in common that we communicate as ourselves, i.e. no fake names or personas, and we discuss a variety of topics both serious and comical with wit and intelligence and in plain English. Online conventions such as emoticons and “internet speak” are rarely used and usually ironically when they are. Most members of each group have met other members in person, so the online forums are an extension of our real-life acquaintance.
On the down side, while I believe in treating the people I interact with online the same as I would in person, sadly in both groups a number of participants seem to feel that they can snark and pick at the known sore spots of others in the group with impunity. They say horrid things online that I doubt they would have the nerve or even the inclination to say that same person’s face. They justify their insensitivity by saying “hey, it’s a humor list.”
I have long shaken my head in sad wonder at this dynamic. Why do intelligent, witty and otherwise caring people act so cruelly toward each other? Dave Barry has said that humor is a release mechanism to help us cope with fear and despair, but to my mind it does not follow — as many of my online correspondents seem to think — that inflicting harm on someone else can be labeled as humor.
Here in this forum the regulars are mutually supportive and seem intent only on having fun and spreading cheer and good will. We can be edgy here but without cutting each other to pieces. I have long marveled that the intelligent and witty people here don’t seem to feel the need to snark at each other like the ones in my other forums do. Why? The semi-anonymity alone can’t be the reason; my limited experience with some public message boards has shown that people will readily lash out at strangers; people without real names and without faces are not “real” so it’s easy to ignore their humanity.
So I am inclined to believe that our use of lolcatspeak is what helps make the difference here. We can channel our true selves through a “catois” that by virtue of its inherent charm and humor serves to peel away the need to be defensive. It may help that those of us willing to express ourselves in this way do so because we don’t have as strong a need to lash out as others might. It occurs to me that the people in my humor forums who scoff the most at lolcats and lolcatspeak are the same ones who most often snark at others in the forum.
While it would never occur to me to adopt a fake persona or do something “cutesy” like writing in all lower-case or purposely misspelling words in one of my writers’ forums, I have come to love who I am and how I am received here in this forum. Thank you, Cheezfrens, for letting me know a measure of snark-free yet fun-filled and intelligent interaction on this internet thingy.

about comments that are abusive and coarse
There is too much nastiness on other sites like
YouTube. When I search under “cute cats” or

I, too am also new within da past cupl o weeks on good ol ICHC. For awyl, i was a lurker and laffing at the pics and capshuns. Den, I noticed the comments sexshun, and decided to venchur into readin dem as well. And i noticed a warm, fun comewnitee and knew I had to git in on dis. Somedays I miss a lot of da comments and don’t read all o dem, but still laff at ‘nawt secund’, dances of various types, hawt choklit, the CCC, the chicken glove ting (I still no unnerstands this?), and so much maur! I am happi to have found this 1derful little haven on da innerwebs! I have ICHC as my happi place after a loooong day at teh werks. I gets home, get greeted by mah kitteh, jump on here and always have a good laff! (Da Roomie tinks I’ze crazy hehe)

Yes. Simply yes, I agree. One other thing to consider is that Lolcat levels us, and instead of dragging us down to a lower level, brings us all up to a higher one. It somehow frees us from the embarrassment and inadequacy we might feel otherwise, and since we don’t feel inadequate, we don’t feel the need to snark at others to bring ourselves “up.” After all, the site has only been here for a year, so we are all new, and therefore equal.

kittehs do wonders for our troops morale. my husband has an “adopted war kitteh” overseas that he talks about a lot and shares his MREs with (freeze dried army food) that little kitteh in the picture made that soldier’s day, i’m sure. God Bless our Troops and their kittehs!

If not, that’s okay…. opening another window allows you to continue to look at this page while you can access the other….
all you have to do is check the little box in the right corner with the little _ in it (should be the first of the 3 in the corner). Then, you’ll have a little ‘bar’ at the bottom: one that says ‘LOLcats’ and the other that says (whatever your home page is).
