Online interactive video games is an example and “pwnd” or “pwn” is expressed when an opponent has been bested.

Interestingly, clever phonetic typing has impacted our everyday language use, and English is an especially dynamic language, too. Example:

I hate leetspeak when it’s used in inappropriate situations…such as in a forum where you’re trying actually to have discussions, but it’s perfectly acceptable when you’re making up crackpot captions for silly animal pictures.

There is a time and place for everything.

To a certain extent, I agree that a joke isn’t really funny if it has to be explained. But you’re gonna run across certain jokes a lot (”pwned” is one you’ll see a great deal), and once you learn what it means, you’ll get the joke next time. It will be funny then. Promise!

I also think it’s fair to say that leetspeak was invented largely to give the gamer culture an insider language that “grownups” can’t understand. Just like all slang is. We’ve all done it.

Please, let’s not attack other people for expressing their opinions civilly. And grammatically!

I can generally understand lolcat fairly well if I try reading it phonetically, I even have tried to do it when I make comments because in spite of my ludditeness I understand that it is part of the game. The leetspeak just completely excapes me, but I’m not on a lot of forums where it is used.

Now, zippycat, you are so right that I am on the web, I even have a blog that has some pictures of my beautiful catboys. I definitely have left a comment here, and I have left several because I LUV dis syte it is sooo funnee, it maikes me laff owt loud but darn it. I have spent too many years of my life typing as an executive secretary that it is almost impossible for me to spell things in proper lolcatspeak, you would not believe how ingrained this typing thing is.

Note that Patrick said “tend” to come across as rude. Not that all are rude. THey just sometimes give that impression.

BTW - this is the first I heard of “leetspeak.: I didnt get the caption, altogether. Got the gist of it from context and mde up a caption I prefer. We have people posting here from all over the world, more or less, an we aren’t all going to get everyone else’s references.
