Originally, the half-dime, dime, quarter-dollar, half-dollar, and dollar were made of silver. In the 1860s the USA replaced the teeny-tiney half dime (and even teenier-tinier silver 3-cent coin, meant for buying 1 postage stamp) with a copper-nickel coin. The Canadians did the same thing sixty years later. In the 1960s, of course, silver coins were replaced with the “sandwich” coins having copper on the inside and copper-nickel on the outside, but they were kept the same size to avoid having to redesign vending machines (and to make it harder to pick out the silver ones and melt them).
