Ai memmer wen ai waz in high school menne, menne yeers ago, der were a series of dreedful tornados neer where ai lived in Ohioi, in rural pard of state. De Amish arrived raite away, wid no asking, and put de barns n houses back up. Dey do it berry, berry fazt, en du berry berry gud wurk. Didn ask a ting. Dey juz don laik outsiders to bodder dem mush.
I grew up in an area with lots of Amish people. One of my friends had a minivan and would drive them around to York and Lancaster for shopping, doctor visits, etc. Years later after she had moved out of the the countryside, her son was killed in a hit and run. When the Amish heard about it they went to her house and cleaned it for her. They are such giving people.
Then again there is a local Amish guy known as Swervin’ Mervin. He drives his buggy drunk and lets the horse take the reins. You always know when your behind him because the horse is going all over the road.
Well, I guess that beats drunk-driving a car. I’d much rather have a head-on collision with a horse than a car any day. :3

Tey speek an old kinda deutsch–my folkses libbed on a ranch in Amish country, an I spoke to some of dem in teh grocery store an such like–at teh time I wuz werkin aun a Master’s degree in deutsch—an I had studied literature from all centuries and time periods, (some haddta be translated into engrisch or modern hoch deutch, cuz it wuz soe old)–an I could understand dem pritty mush when I overherd ‘em, und a amish laydee wuz nyce enuff to tawk wiff mii about teh language. Butt usually tehy will naut speek to “the English” (non-amish) in there lang. eben whin dey noe jerman.
Dey war nice und dey hift my Vater on der Farm–he paid dem der rates–eben die jungones werked. Wen dey werked fur uns, tehy used our moderne Equipment–lawn mowers, tracters, power saws, etc. Mein Vater kept a Telephone in der Barn fur dem, was dey uset offen. Mein Vater hired dem a lot. Usually gut werkers. Wenn mein Vater died, an der Farm went up fur Auction, de Amishes bought it. (Dey dont haben enuff Land fur all da upcomming generations, so dey glad to hab das Ranch.)
