My father was very sick over the summer and was hallucinating all sorts of weird stuff and was very confused – half the time didn’t recognise me, was convinced people had stolen from him, and was also convinced he’d spent the weekend in Canada, and Paris, and Sweden (in fact he’d been in his hospital bed the whole time) and was asking me to explain what was going on. Which I really couldn’t do! Up to that point he’d been completely rational and suddenly my dad just wasn’t there any more.

It was really scary and very tough to go through because you have to be “up” for them when you visit but just want to collapse in a little heap so I really feel for you.

I used to be a home health aide. I cared for a man who had a diagnosis that was unknown to me, but he was very stiff in affect, like a robot. I did not expect emotional outbursts from him. One day he asked me, in effect, what the point of living was.

In effect, I reminded him of the “ripple effect.” I reminded him that one tiny little action, perhaps done by himself, could ripple out into a huge aftereffect that could safe a life or some other thing. (It sounded so much better and eloquent when I said it to him,…LOL!) He said quietly for a moment, then his whole body collapsed and he WAILED…HUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!

I had touched him so much he howled with emotion. I made him KNOW that he was important in the universe.

Just as you have touched us.

These things are what life is made of.

LOLcats is the only thing that can make me laugh and help balance out the sadness. Though Mom is pretty funny, even in this state. She’s hallucinating ants on the walls and ceilings (not uncommon) and yesterday asked if I could see them. When I said no, she said “well, then, you must have gone blind!” I told her that I did need some new glasses, and she told me to go and get them asap.
