IME, kittehs kept in separate room for a few days gets along fine when let out. Is funny to see littel pawses unner the door wif old kittehs watchin an bappin at dem. Dey gets used to each odder dat way. Wunce we letted in 2 kittehs off teh street wifout teh separate room part, an dey still fites wif teh kittehs who was here furst.

gayla….speeking from way more experience than I want to admit to, the separate room thing is the best way….if there is “sniffing room” at the bottom of the door it is even better…cats are naturally curious. It may take a little while….we have had some very unhappy kitties before when new babies were brought in to foster/rescue…but eventually they learned to, at the very least, tolerate one another! (at that time, we had 14 of our own cats and litter after litter of foster/rescues)

Or not, but i just love that word to define the EEEEEK movements of kittehs. My kitteh, Chester, was poking around on my pillow the other night, as he does when I go to bed, and I moved my sudoku book a bit and he practically launched into space. I was quite helpless with the giggles for a long time after that!

it can help if for the first couple days you just keep the kitten confined to one room with all the stuff she needs, so that the other kitties can smell her through the crack at the bottom of the door and just get used to her smell and her being around. also, cats use vocality a LOT to try to scare each other during their fights, so it might sound a little worse than it actually is. territory is really serious stuff with cats. (“TEH CHEEZBURGER IS MINE BETCH!!!!!”)

the Humane Society of the United States’ website has a lot of useful articles on stuff like this. just go to hsus.org and do a search on new kitten or introducing new cat, and you’ll get a ton of info! …but for the record, my (three-year-old) kitten and older cat still don’t really get along; they rarely fight anymore, but there are no snugglebunnies between them.
