That’s what I was thinking – I actually did vote this one down in the factory, for the same reasons others aren’t liking it much either – but assuming kitteh hasn’t been declawed, I’m rooting for it to shred the hell outta the box and become Vanishing Kitteh.

Frankly, I don’t feel ICHC should publish these either when the animal has purposefully been used in such a way, even if the person who capped the picture took a freebie from online and didn’t take it themselves. Only natural poses in non-threatening situations should be allowed.

agreed. moments after the picture was taken, kitty probably zeroed in on that lid (y’all know what look i’m taking about: whiskers flat, ears back) and just busted right through. it’s what my cats do whenever they climb in somewhere and we tip it up and/or close the flap.
I would also be willing to bet this cat climbed in by itself. Cats are good at getting themselves stuck in strange places.
I knew this would eventually happen. People are desperate to get “funny” at any cost. Not sure how you stop this other than refusing to publish the obviously inhumanely obtained pictures. Good times (fads, trends, etc.) can turn ugly REAL quick when capitalizing on the wrong thing.
Please people…..use your creativity for captioning photos and not, as the person above so brilliantly phrased, “as lolcat action figures”.
.. how do you know that the kitteh has been purposefully used in that way? my cats get into spaces like that all the time, as well as defy the old saying ‘if you got into it, you can get out of it.’ i can’t count the number of times that they’ve jumped into the planters way up by the ceilings and i’ve had to climb up to get them down.
the cat does look scared, but that may have been the camera flash? my cats hate that. does that make it inhumane to take pictures of them?

I mostly agree with the sentiments above, but it also strikes me that maybe kitty is just feisty? My cats get that dark-eyed, tense look when they’re up to something. If kitty DID happen to get in the box on its own, that look would mean more “I’m gonna getcha!” than “Halp!”
Still, it’s unclear enough that I don’t think ICHC should have posted this one.
I am sure Chz and Tofu knew this would be controversial before they posted it — but it was USER voted! I don’t really like it, but the kitty seems unharmed.

People need to calm down. The cat does not “look scared.” It is not a human bieng, and it does not have human facial expressions. Remember that though the point of lolcats is to humorously anthropomorphise the animals by reading human feelings and intentions into their actions, it is only humour. While it’s possible to read something into the emotions of cat by looking at its overall body language – posture, muscle tenseness, tail, ears etc. – they do not have human facial expressions. What you’re perceiving as a scared look could just as easily be the cat wide-eyed as it looks through the unfamiliar transparent plastic. Besides which, if it really wanted to get out, do you think it would just be sitting there?
Cats DO have distinctly readable facial expressions – dilation of pupils, tension of mouth, wideness of eyes, slant of whiskers (not mentioning ear position and head posture – and not only are the expressions created by the same muscles that create human expressions, most of us who have/have had cats have considerable practice in reading cat faces. Even without raising it to a conscious level, most of us looking at this pic feel the kitteh’s unhappiness. Anthropomorphism has nothing to do with that “gut feeling”; we respond to a pic we recognize as characteristic of stressed cat.

Um.. I think people are bothered by this handsome kitteh, because:
Looks tightly concealed in box, as in flaps not open, and cello wrap is not torn,
and
he/she is not “smiling” or looking relaxed, like his animated buddy portrayed on the box.
What is interesting is that a few pics back some of you – some i said – were defending the bonsai kitten website, which truly looks like it was real, but it was recognized as satirical or just offbeat humor. Also, what do you think of picture of adorable kitty being held by the scruff by a male arm/hand – THAT kitteh looked really skeered, and also of cats shown yowling as their being bathed – forcibly it would seem?

I think people are overreacting. Every cat I’ve ever had has loved to get into boxes just like that and they climb right out a few minutes later. I bet the owner just closed the flap for a minute to take the picture. I really don’t think the cat was harmed and it doesn’t seem scared.

Practical jokes aren’t for everyone, but if this photo actually has you upset, you might want to ask your friends to tell you whether maybe you are wrapped a little too tight.

Okay, has everyone forgotten the post a few days ago that showed a cat in some kind of plastic jar, and a second cat climbs in with it, even though there wasn’t really room for the first cat?
I’m not saying that I condone photos that show animals in genuine distress, I’m just asking to keep a few things in mind: Kitteh is clearly well-cared for. Kitteh probably got into the box themselves, and the owner flipped the lid closed and snapped a pic.
Yes, I agree that the kitteh looks sad, but as was stated above–so does the kitteh in the classic “I made u a cookie” post. What we are looking at is a point in time about what–1/80th of a second? To assign an emotion to that short of an instant is judging without information. To me kitteh looks a little more irritated than sad–I agree with others who think kitteh is about to explode out of that box and will probably pop the freshness seal on a can of whupass all over their owner. Kitteh’s pupils are almost fully dialated. I don’t own kittehs, so I can’t claim to be an expert (or a legal profeshunal) but I do know that the 2 main times when a kitteh’s eyes are like that are when it is very dark, or when they are on the hunt and about to strike. I have seen video of kittehs going from interested, to Butt Wiggle of Doom, and in the space of about a second their pupils fully open. Pretty cool, ackshully.
Also, how many of you cat owners out there can think of things that your cats (or cats who may no longer be with you) used to climb into, and then close themselves into, and when you try to get them out they fight you or close the lid/door/opening again?

my kitti lurves hims box we play like this all the time….he climbs in, i close lid, he pops head up out of box, i tickle face wiv feather. kitti no scared or hurt, just looks unsettling…

This cat may look scared to some people, but to me he just looks ‘wild’. My cat gets the very same wild look in his eyes whenever he’s hyper – and when that happens, we all know what he’d like to jump into
It seems to me the cat went in himself. Maybe there’s even a hidden opening of the box behind or above the cat. You never know. The box flaps being in that position suggests that the box is open or that the cat has just jumped in and moved them. At least, that’s what it looks like to me.
