my father’s mother used to drive a small sportscar – a fiat I think – and she complained to him that her winshield wipers weren’t working. he went, checked them, wipers were brand new. “well” she said, “they don’t clean the part that *I* look through”

actooly – I think the red is the vascular retnia, like in red-eye in humans, and the green is the reflective area cats use to amp up light for nocturnal vision – whut we’re seeing is a different refraction in each eye because of the angle of kitty’s head? or, not.

Dang, here I wuz thinkin all thickness of teh eye relative to teh angle of teh light, filterin out different wavelengths, but ur idea maeks way moar sense.
I think it’s the angle. head on = green reflective layer for nocturnal light intensification, angled = vessels of retnia. maybe.
… which means the green is polarized? you see this effect at night when cats turn towards you and their eyes reflect green – you don’t see it so strongly from the side…
It does have something to do with the angle and something to do with pigmentation of the eyes.
The tapetum lucidum (the bright reflective yellow/blue/green part of the eye) only covers part of the back of the eye. So at extreme angles. it may be missed leading to red eye (light bouncing off red blood vessels of the retina) in normal cats.
Cats with blue eyes (meezers, himmes. white cats, etc) tend to have no pigment in the tapetum leading to no reflection of light so they will usually have red eye rather than the brighter reflection.
