Anudder thing (dat tru fans probably already knows) is dat Watterson’s first attempt at getting a syndicated strip published was a semi-serious, action-adventure strip called (no, I am not making this up) Spaceman Spiff!
He was rejected by every person he showed the strip, and many told him that he would never make it in the industry.
Later, after C&H started gaining popularity, he started incorporating the Spaceman Spiff theme into C&H–partly because he wanted to still use the character and some of the ideas he had for that strip, but mainly as a sort of thumbing his nose at all the publishers who passed him by.

Mah favorite wuz when Calvin chugged teh soda and let with teh sonic boom belch…Hobbes leaping in teh air with tail bent at right angle was teh win.
I wunce enlarged that pic of Calvin belching up to 8×10 and hand colored it (this was in teh dayz befoar teh scannerz and teh PCs and teh paint programz). Framed it too. Much classic art.

Nor did he authorize any other reproduction. He said mainly college kids would reproduce Calvin and Hobbes on shirts, posters, etc. One of the most popular strips images were stolen from was the strip where they’re dancing to a classical vinyl record (33 1/3) played at 45 or 78 RPM, instead of the normal 33 1/3 RPM. What made me lol is his mom says either Calvin’s playing that record at 45 or 78 RPM, or she’s dreaming. His dad says tomorrow morning he’s calling the orphanage.

Watterson spent much of his career trying to change the climate of newspaper comics. He believed that the artistic value of comics was being undermined, and that the space they occupied in newspapers continually decreased, subject to arbitrary whims of short-sighted publishers. Furthermore, he opined that art should not be judged by the medium for which it is created (i.e., that there is no “high” art or “low” art, just art).
Watterson opposed the structure publishers imposed on Sunday newspaper cartoons: the standard cartoon starts with a large, wide rectangle featuring the cartoon’s logo, and the rest of the strip is presented in a series of rectangles of different widths. In his opinion this format limited the cartoonist’s options of allowable presentation. Watterson managed to gain an exception to these constraints for Calvin and Hobbes, allowing him to draw his Sunday cartoons the way he wanted. In many of his strips, the panels overlap or contain their own panels; in some the action progresses diagonally across the strip.
Watterson also battled against pressure from publishers to merchandise his work, something that he felt would cheapen his comic.
