Not to kill the lolbuzz, but this kind of photo does make me a bit sad. Even if care is taken to regularly groom a bunny like this, the fur is at such a length where it really can’t be comfortable for the bun. Having hair that long makes even getting around difficult for the rabbit. My bunnysitter has a rescue angora and keeps her pretty well trimmed so she’s comfortable and happy. It is an amusing picture and I’m not going to call for its removal or anything. Just keep in mind that most bunnies would be a lot happier with more frequent haircuts.

Yah, but these bunnies are usually kept for their wool. ^_^ Much like a sheep, they’re trimmed when they have a full ‘crop’ of wool. It’s not cruel, it’s just what the breed was actually made for. My friend keeps one and trims her when she’s ready so that she can make wool yarn from the bunny fluff.

Well, that depends. Angoras are the result of hundreds of years of breeding to make wool for spinning & knitting, etc. *All* rabbits are very heat-sensitive, and it’s true that angoras are even more so, on account of their coats. Anyone who lives with an angora rabbit needs to know this and to make sure they are kept cool, and preferably indoors! An angora left outside in a hutch on a hot day can very easily go into heat shock, which can be fatal. But to a lesser extent, this is true of all rabbits. Responsible angora “owners” make *sure* their bunnies are kept cool, and if this is not possible, a responsible angora person will not hesitate to shear the rabbit even if that means loosing a shearing’s worth of angora fiber — all bunny lovers will agree that the health of the rabbit is the most important thing, and spinning fiber and/or a “show coat” is secondary. I make sure I leave the a/c on for my angora if there’s *any* chance of it getting too warm inside. He is litterbox trained, gets along great with my cat (mostly), and has full run of our very-carefully-bunnyproofed livingroom and kitchen when we are home to supervise. He is a very happy bunny, and probably one of the world’s most spoiled and overindulged, at that. (smile)
Hair that long does not impede their movement or comfort at all if it and the rabbit are both properly cared for.
Angoras, like all bunnies, make wonderful pets — but they are also *very* labor-intensive pets, requiring a *lot* of time and special care. Bunnies are fragile animals, and not suitable pets for kids under 9 or 10! If you are interested in getting a rabbit, make SURE you know what you’re getting into first — they are not for everybody. And if at that point you still want a rabbit, please check your local shelter or rabbit rescue organization, or PetFinder, or whatever — lots and lots of bunnies die in shelters everyday, and you could save a life!

Be warned though rabbits like to nibble on things. My rabbit would chew electrical cords with abound. So if you let them roam your house make sure they can’t get at the delicious black wall string beans.

FYI - By the look of it, that rabbit is definitely a show rabbit. In which case, the fur has to be kept at its natural length or it will be disqualified. This rabbit is obviously kept very well groomed and as long hair is a characteristic of the breed the rabbit is not uncomfortable. Most, if not all, angora breeders know well how to care for their long-haired friends, so you needn’t worry.
