Slythwolf, I am a psychology professor, and I can tell you that both factors are involved. Yes, some people are prone to violence. But, violence in the media is also a huge factor in bringing out those tendencies in susceptible people. There’s tons of research on this. I’ll be happy to provide references on this if you want.
Kristy, I wish I could “lighten up” but when you’ve been a sexual assualt victim (like I have been), it’s just kind of hard to find a video about a man kidnapping, torturing, and killing a woman to be funny.
I’m sure some people will say that if this sort of stuff bothers me, I should just ignore it. But, ignoring violence in the media doesn’t protect you from the people who are influenced by it. I’ll bet that many of the kids killed at Columbine had tried to ignore violent video games. It didn’t stop them from being killed, did it?
Also, I DO try to avoid depictions of violence on the internet. It’s just too upsetting, given my history. But I thought a site featuring cute pictures of kittehs would be SAFE for me to look at! I honestly don’t think it’s fair to victims to post this kind of stuff here.

killing to eat and killing because of a mental aberration are two very different things. the killer in the movie was very sick, (mentally and image wise, YEEEECH!) like judy, i come to this site for fun and happiness and because so far it’s the one place i’ve found that is really nice. the people are nice, the captions are sweet, and the kitties are really cute. (i was bounced from an ETIQUETTE site for telling some one to be nicer, GO FIGURE!!!). i have a snake, the snake eats mice which i have to buy and feed to him. not everything in life is hearts and flowers, bug come on guys! the nastiness of that music video does not match the wonderful niceness of this site. nice is a quality that is hard to come by in this world and should not be trivialized or taken for granted. despite the fact that i have watched, (and enjoyed), silence of the lambs, it is not funny especially not like this.

we (i) are not advocating censorship or the obliteration of a meme, just a little self control and respect for the comfort level of others. the other beauty of freedom of expression is the fact that with freedoms come responsibilities. such as the responsibility to make sure that other people are not so disgusted with your expression that they refuse to associate with you, or if you (and i use the term “you” as a general, not directed at anyone) do choose to make expressions that drive others away then you do not mourn you lack of company. the only people i know that force their expression on others and expect to be agreed with are bullies and after a while no one is their friend anymore.

Did I miss something? Was ICHS ever billed as a purely “family friendly” site? Yes, ICHS is usually full of teh cute due to the fact that, hmm, cats are cute… but nowhere is it written that it’s G-rated. I don’t understand everyone who has problems with pictures of the lotion nature, or the bukkakitty nature… it’s funny!! Lighten up! And if you don’t like it, or don’t want your kids looking at it, or don’t want to pass it on to your friends, then don’t look at it, watch what your kids do online, and don’t forward it to your friends.

But how are you supposed to avoid looking at it if you have no way to know it’s there until AFTER you’ve already seen it?
No one gives ratings to internet sites. ICHC doesn’t have a G rating because no online sites have ratings at all. You have to judge a site’s content by the site’s name and description, the links from other sites, stuff like that. And, by all those methods, this should be a site without links to videos re-enacting serial killings. You’re telling parents that they should watch what their kids do online, but how are parents supposed to know that a site that always had cute pictures of cats in the past is now going to link to a video about a serial killer?
there are always going to be references to things people are trying to avoid. what if someone had a bucket phobia or what if someone who is deathly scared of cats (like my aunt sylvia) just so happened to stumble onto this site on accident OR maybe i accidently forwarded HER an email w/ a link instead of someone else? its something internet users need to be aware of. youre on the internet its an open invitation for things you DO NOT WANT!!!

1. If you don’t like the captions, talk to Thomas Harris, he’s the author of the book Silence of the Lambs, and he created those quotes. You should tell him off! Tell him off really hard, for writing a book back in the 1980s that became a movie in the 1990s that developed a huge fan-following for reasons OTHER than the violence and has now been semi-spoofed with kittens. People laugh at twisted things, and they have done so for ages. I don’t think that’s going to change. It’s human nature. Besides that, Silence of the Lambs is actually a huge movie, even though it came out in 1991. It’s still big to a lot of people. It’s a horror/suspense classic, man. It’s been spoofed and parodied by many people, and nobody’s going to stop because a few people get squeamish. You know your boundaries. You know what you like and don’t like. Stop exposing yourself to things you don’t like. To steal a line from the ads for Hostel2 (uh-oh, opening up a whole new can of worms here) … IT’S ONLY A MOVIE, IT’S ONLY A MOVIE, IT’S ONLY A MOVIE. breathe, people.
2. If someone’s going to go out and murder/eat somebody because of this site, they were going to do it anyway, they just needed an excuse and would’ve found it anywhere else anyway.
