With my slightly chunky kitteh, Tonya, there is no asks, there is only steels (one time when she was still little, she got up on the back of my chair, jumped over my shoulder and snatched a piece of chicken right out of my hand as i was about to take a bite and ran off behind the bookshelf alternately growling and making the usual *nomnomnom* sounds)

then the little beast came out from behind the shelf, laid down at my feet and looked at me as happy as could be, licking her chops with an expression that said “O Hai, I eated ur chikkin, do u has moar?”

My other kitteh, Shadow is polite like the one in the picture, if a little insistent… she’ll keep bumping into me with her head and looking up at my plate with her whispery little 5dB half-meow as if to say “i can has sum, plz…..prtty plz?” and more graciously, she’ll sit right next to me while giving off the *nom nom nom* noises instead of running off with her snack like “k thx bai”

I love this kitteh’s name: Pancakes. Makes me smile.

  20. scarletkitty says:

This is kind of off thread, but I need some help. My kitty came home today
from the vet, for a trial to see if she will eat at home. She has kidney and liver
problems, don’t know why, but I suspect she stuck her nose in the lily plant I
got for mother’s day. She has NEVER shown an interest in plants before this and it
was put where it was not easy to get to and I never saw her near it. But, something caused this. But the vet says sometimes it just happens.
She can only stay home if she eats. She has never been interested in people food, which I figured was good. But right now she is not interested in eating her
normal food either. She eagerly begins to eat, but stops after only one NOM.
Does anyone out there have any suggestions that might tempt her? Right now
she eats Hill’s prescription diet WD. And she has always loved it. She has
not eaten since Friday. HELP!!!! PLEASE!!!!

    • SarahD says:

Oh, sorry to hear that. Was it a peace lily? Poor thing. Sometimes cats just get a crazy idea in their head about plants even after they’ve left them alone. My parents’ cat recently started eating the FAKE plants after he’s lived there 5 years!

Does she like chicken? When our animals had problems eating, sometimes we’d start them on rice with chicken broth and then work some tiny pieces of shredded chicken in there. Then eventually work back into the cat food…

I wonder if she’s just scared of eating because the last time she really ate, it was the plant and made her sick. Might take some enticing. Good luck, Scarlet! *hugs*

    • BonzoGal says:

My vet had us use baby food meat, ever so slightly heated up to release the meat smell. Be very careful to get meat that has NO onions, as they are really bad for kittehs.

If she hasn’t eaten since Friday, though, you might want to call the vet again- is she drinking water?

      • Melissa says:

Yep. what u said. I was a vet tech for 3 years, and meat baby food usually stimulated an appetite. Or Hill’s A/D formula. But yes, also back to what Tiny cheez said, If a cat dosen’t eat especially if kitteh is overweight, fatty liver disease is dangerous. I would check w/your vet before trying anything, but baby food usually works. GOOD LUCK!!! I Be givin prayers for kitteh!

    • gladys says:

      Scarlet:

My kitz get raw homemade food, and the thing that sends them into insane amounts of NOM NOM NOM is ground rabbit. I have a recipe–there’s a supplier I buy from who raises the rabbits herself, and they’re WHOLE ground rabbits–bones and organs and the works. I mix the ground rabbit with egg yolks, salmon oil, vitamin E, vitamin B, and taurine…and then I get out of the way so I don’t get caught in the stampede to the bowl! You could probably shortcut it, just as a test, and try the rabbit with just the egg yolks.

Actually, now that I think of it, there may be an even easier shortcut: Go to the healthfood store/vitamin place and get salmon oil capsules. When you go to feed your kitteh, poke a hole in a capsule and drizzle the contents over the food–you know, kinda like an olive-oil garnish! (This is how I got my finicky kitteh over to raw food–the oil is good for them, and apparently they think it’s delicious, though every time I’ve gotten it on my hands it smells like DO NOT WANT. They start by licking up the oil, and then just sorta keep going.)

Good luck to you and your kitteh–feel free to e-mail me if you want to try the raw food idea!

    • Betsy says:

Have you tried good old fashioned tunafish? Try the chunk light kind, not the albacore – it’s softer and “fishier” than the albacore.

You might want to talk to the vet about her medication. My kitteh is on Tapizole for her thyroid problem (which can trigger kidney problems), and sometimes the medicine makes her not want to eat (mah kitteh is 18 years old). I called my vet about it, and she said to stop the medication for a dose or two, until she starts to eat again. Then we work our way up to the normal dosage again. I’ve been doing this for years now, and Miss Bubbles is still with me!

      • Lily Kitten says:

My darling cat was a feral cat who came out of the woods and trained us to be her slaves. Among her wishes was a food to give her a better quality coat, as it is tough to be in the wind and sun and dust so much. We gave her an egg one day, and she nommed it up. Then we read it wasn’t safe, so we cooked the next one. She emphatically did not want. She looked at me as if to say, “Look Lady, I eat rats, birds, and gophers. Why are you worrying about a few germs in an egg?” So she gets raw eggs. This seems to make her tummy feel better when she has eaten something that doesn’t agree with her (the occasional lizard) and when she has a tapeworm an egg comforts her until I get her to the vet. It is an adventure living with a cat who is so devil-may-care, but we respect the fact that she survived beautifully without us, so we can’t dictate any terms to her. Anyway, an egg might be just what a poor under-the-weather kitteh might like . . .

    • Annie says:

You’ve probably already done this, but I did a google search for plants hazardous to cats and there’s tons of sites, but here’s one from cat fancy that has an alpabetical list: http://www.cfainc.org/articles/plants.html

‘rilla kitteh stopped eating once and we went to deh petstore and got a can of “milk” that was like Ensure would be for huumins. Don’t know if that woud help her or not?

      Sure hope she gets better!

    • Laura says:

Baby food is a good one to try. We had an 18-year old cat die of kidney failure and in the early stages of his decline the only way we could get him to eat was to mix in Chicken Liver baby food with his wet food. Good luck to you and yours, having a sick kitty is so hard. My heart goes out to you.

  21. aspirin says:

ScarletKitty–Hill’s makes a Prescription Diet formula called a/d especially formulated for animals recovering from serious illness or major surgery. It comes in both dog and cat formulas. I have used both. It was very helpful, both the dog(who was a major picky eater) and the cat loved it. Hope your kitty gets better.

  22. Tiny Cheezburger (In Memory of The Catburger) says:

Vets can also prescribe appetite stimulants to induce kittehs to have the NOM NOMs. The danger in letting a sick kitteh go on without eating is that he or she may develop fatty liver disease, which can be fatal if not treated. If you do end up going the appetite stimulant route, do yourself a big favor and get some Pill Pockets at a pet store. They make it much easier for both the human and the pet! *wishing your kitteh much in the way of NOM NOM*

  23. scarletkitty says:

Thank you all so much for your suggestions and your caring! That alone makes
ME feel better. She has been boarding at the vet since Monday and would not
eat there–she was scared. But she has been drinking some, and was getting
IV fluids, too. They are just hoping she will eat at home so we can avoid
more drastic measures. She has never been one to eat people food AT ALL.
She eats the water off canned tuna, but won’t touch the tuna. I put the water
on her dry food today, and she licked off the fluid, but left most of her food.
I am going to try some of these very good ideas; maybe something will work.
Otherwise, I will have to take her back to the vet tomorrow.
And, TC, what is this “Pill Pocket” of which you speak? Will it be easier
to give her meds with it?
Again, thank you to all my dear friends at the Cheezburgers. I just knew
you would come through for me!

    • Melissa says:

U an kitteh in mah prayers!

    • Tiny Cheezburger (In Memory of The Catburger) says:

*\o/* YAY FOR ANNIE KITTEH AND THE NOM NOMS!!!! *\o/*
*\o/* *\o/* *\o/* *\o/* *\o/* *\o/* *\o/* *\o/* *\o/* *\o/* http://www.pillpockets.com, is down as I’m writing this post, but hopefully it will be up soon. You can find Pill Pockets in any pet store. They’ll be with the rest of the prepackaged treats. I paid $8 a bag (45 treats — the cat size), which lasted a little over 3 weeks for The Catburger. For treats, they are expensive, but if you consider what they are used for and how they fill a market niche that other treats do not (again, the soft, moldable squishiness), they’re well worth the money. (They are also less expensive than getting the medication made at a compounding pharmacy — which will only blend the medication with a flavoring, rather than envelop the medication with tastiness. No guarantee of success with compounded meds, as a result.) If your pet accepts them as any other treat, then the stress of giving medication is GONE, for both you and the pet! They’re just fabulous!

      And one more time …
*\o/* YAY FOR ANNIE KITTEH AND THE NOM NOMS!!!! *\o/*
      *\o/* *\o/* *\o/* *\o/* *\o/* *\o/* *\o/* *\o/* *\o/* *\o/*

      • Tiny Cheezburger (In Memory of The Catburger) says:

FEH, the chzsrvr et half my post!

Btw, all the *\o/* are cheerburgers :D

Here’s the part that got et … it’s supposed to go before the mention of the Pill Pockets website in my previous post … I’m recreating it to the best of my ability.

For scarletkitty and anyone else who has a lolcat or loldog, you need to know about Pill Pockets! They are very special treats designed to help you give your pet a pill or capsule. You know how cats often go *PLEH* *PTOOI* when you try to flip a pill down their throats? S’cuz those meds are nasty tasting! Most dogs will take pills in a bit of butter, cream cheez, or peanut butter — but it’s nowhere as easy with cats. Even moist cat treats will crumble too much if you try to smoosh them around a pill, but the Pill Pockets are very soft and squishy, and have a hole in them already (they’re shaped like bukkets!). You just put the pill in, close it up, and give it to your pet. The pet will say: *NOM NOM* “O hai, that was teh yum! Thx!” without a clue that you just gave him/her a pill! I always gave The Catburger his Pill Pockets (and meds) right before meals, and he gobbled the Pill Pockets down with no fuss whatsoever. Ever! No fuss! None! And he was a cat who acted like you were cutting his face off if you needed to do the slightest medical thing to him, like give him a pill or put some ointment on his belly. So he clearly had no idea that I was giving him medicine twice a day.

The Pill Pockets for cats come in salmon or chicken flavors, and the ones for dogs are bacon, beef, and chicken (I think). The dog ones are bigger in order to accomodate larger pills, and as a result, there are fewer in the bag. I can’t tell you enough how much stress Pill Pockets saved me and The Catburger every day. They are a truly wondermous product and I will recommend them to anyone who has a pet with medication needs. (And no, I don’t work for the company that makes them!)

    • tal says:

In the pet section at most supermarkets you can probably find KMR- Kitten Milk Replacement. It will have some of the nutrients and calories Miss Scarlet needs, as well as liquids…and may tempt her to start eating real kitty food again.
Fish oil and olive oil are good to put on food too- if you compare the labels on the salmon oil and the fish oil and the numbers are the same, then there’s no need to go with the really spendy salmon oil unless you choose to.
Good luck with Miss Scarlett…tell her anorexia in kitties is Not Cool.

  24. scarletkitty says:

An Annie Kittie update for all u wonderful ppls at the Cheezburger:
Annie a little bit of roasted chicken. Then I went to the pet store to find
tempting treats. I bought a can of the Ensure-type drink. She turned up
her nose at it, but I am leaving it out for a little bit, just in case.
Then I gave her a bit of Hill’s canned seafood blend with gravy.
    And she NOM NOM NOMed!!!!!
I will watch her closely, then try her on a little bit more in a couple of hours.
She has been following me all over, as usual, but is even talkier than normal.
Right now she is stretched out in the middle of the carpet in the spare bedroom–one of her favorite places.
I have high hopes, and a lot of that is due to all of you.
    I can’t thank you enough.
THANK YOU!!!!! from the bottom of my heart.
(that was my best shot for now.)

      Anyway,
Annie kitteh is doing much better. Mike went and got her more of the canned food
today. She is eating it AND her dry food. She is drinking well, too.
The vet sent us home with meds for her today–antibiotics and an appetite
stimulant. She is not totally out of the woods yet, but is doing quite well.
I will start mixing the canned with the kibble soon to get her back on her diet
      as soon as possible. Her “digestive system” is working again, too……( ;
      I am sooooooooooo relieved.
I am also sooooooooooooooo grateful for all the support I have found here.
