This oddity occurs in humans, too (we can assume without the spots). The males, in both cases, are usually sterile.

nope. calico males are not ALWAYS sterile alas. my parents have one. vet took pictures when he met him, said he was sterile. then he fathered 3 litters of kittens. but yes they are very nearly always sterile

Ahhh, onionpencil… XXY chromosome kitteh is always sterile. Chimera kitteh not. You probably have a chimera kitteh … two embryos implanted so close to each other they grew together… one orange, one black. In that instance, the testes are normal and carry one of the original two kittehs’ DNA.

Onion: They wouldn’t have necessarily known unless they did specific DNA testing at various points. Is possible to have boi-gurl chimera kitteh too, and not knows it. By definition, XXY is infertile. Eethur wayz, u gots u a VERRUH rarez kitteh!! Takez kare ov hims!!

well, clearly, my parents were unlikely to spring for dna testing. no idea if vet changed his verdict after kitten batches 1-3. (no idea if vet is clued-in either, though one would hope) i oughta ask next time i call. i know about chimeras, and that xxy cats are supposed to be infertile. bit of a genetics geek. lot of other cats dislike him- possibly he smells funny due to whatever it is that makes him different. or perhaps he said rude things in cat lol
