Update 04232007 – 6:10pm:
- Just got word from js-kit that they featured on techcrunch, they need us to scale back our use of ratings — so I’ve turned it off on posts, but leaving it on for cheezburger-ratings (newish karma). They are growing fast and we have to respect their free service. go js-kit!
- Also for parents, regarding polite mode — it is disabled while we settle into our new theme, i will be adding it back in as soon as time permits. (gotta retest, etc).
So we’re alive on megacheezserver.
We did a little redesign to make things easier to view on smaller browsers…your opinion matters to us, if you have an idea how to improve things let us know dear burgers, about ur website…

Oh! We also moved back to icanhascheezburger.com so the ratings might be borked … but things will settle … and some exciting things will come now that we have our voting/karma back!
The redesign will probably have flaws and issues, so give us a day or two to shake out things… .

I like the ratings… having the 5-burger bar on COMMENTS as well as posts might be overkill, as opposed to simple +1/-1 burgers, but maybe it makes the script simpler.
Banner design is just starting to get a leetle busy. Don’t overdo.
I like the double-column tags for tidiness. Not sure if I like the sort, though; alpha made sense. It’s a quibble; I can always use Ctrl-F if I really need to find that one tag.
If it’s possible to bring back nested comments without spiking your bandwidth or getting to complicated on the backend (so comment quotes and/or replies are clearer), I liked that too.
….aaand of course I hit “Submit” before I’m finished editing. Ah well.

I think the up/down votes on comments worked better, because 1-5 rating works only when a larger number of people votes. What do you think?

hidas, we can’t use php on the site that updates the database… so I am using js-kit, I spoke with the developers and requested a karma + / – version, hopefully they’ll implement it in a way that I can just drop it in and it’ll work using the current data … i.e. 1 – 2 burger rating = -1, 3 = 0, 4 – 5 = +1…

We (Catburger and I) are very pleased that ICHC is back up. We don’t have much to add, in that most of our comments have been mentioned already by others, but here goes:
– Font is too small; Tiny Cheezburger already wears glasses, but Catburger doesn’t want to!
– Tiny Cheezburger says burger karma made more sense, but if you are going to leave it in a 1-5 star system, don’t try to translate that to previous burger karma, just average each new vote in with previous ones.
– Catburger says you should change star icons to burgers. +5 chzbrgrs fr u!
– Top of page is getting too busy.
– Catburger says: “PLS PLS PLS put all stuff in narrow columns on ONE side or the other, but not BOTH … is better for small browsers than it was before, but not as good as it could be!”
– Tags need to have an alphabetizing option; perhaps give readers the choice between “most popular” and alpha?

Rly, I miss the generous “white space” that the old site had. It felt more open, less cluttered.
More thoughts… I’d like better separation between the ads and the content. I mean, hey, we all love the cuet pink t-shirt girl, but she needs protection from all the big lolruses.
I’d also like to see the tags column and the search/links/peeps/etc. column rolled in to one. Maybe some sweet Ajax-y dropdown for the tags list? You could click the word “tags” and the list appears–like the “See All Product Categories” tab on Amazon.com? Yeah. And I’d like a pony, too.
I liked more your previous design =) but well, maybe it’s just a matter of getting used to it =}

The top banner is a l’il “Napoleon Dynamite” – ish… flippin’ sweet! I can see what ppl are saying about it starting to get too busy, but I don’t think it’s crossed the threshhold. iz undrstandbl ‘n’ obvious that evrythngs not gun be purrfect right off da bat – u did just get onto teh megaservr, aftah all =P
The one thing (other than the nested comments bit) I’ll mention is the columns on the right side; having two there really doesnt do much for the looks of things. Maybe instead of havin the “top tags” actually listed there – though it is convienient – you could put a link on the top of the page that opens up a l’il popup window? Or perhaps the site might look better with a border around the main info separating it fom the side columns, or maybe a site template that could work in frames? I dunno, just a suggestion… u runs teh cheezsurvr, not meh
All in all, I think it looks great, and I’m absolutely psyched that you’re back and that everything’s working out so well. CHEEZBRGR 4EVR!!! =]

Wow! I like the new design much more. No hard feelings against kubrick, but I think such a popular blog should have more personality. Heck yeah. I even have a custom theme for my own blog. I like tag clouds with different size tags much more than your aproach.

I pretty much agree with everyone else’s comments. However, I would really like to have the ability to rate pictures from the main page, without having to click on the post title and go into the comments, like with the old system. Comment ratings are kind of superfluous for me.
I’m glad the site is up and running again though!

Oh man… where to begin.
You guys have to tone this back. Your server load could be cut in half if you just nuked it all and went back to a standard WP install. The customer header from before = muy cute. The CATergories from before – too cluttered – why browse? Just use teh search, or at least, make a special page that lists all the tags or categories. No reason for the front page to contain SOOOOO MUCH INFORMATION.
I can has overloadz.
Oh – and comment rating is also superfluous – but I’m probably only saying that because this comment, and the one above it are both going to get burger’d down into oblivion because tehy are teh negative.

I second the vote for sticking all the narrow-column content (ads, tags, etc) on one side of the page, preferably the right.
I personally hate custom font sizes (I mean, if you use a decent browser, you choose your preferred text size), but at the very least, it needs to be a bit bigger.
I liked the old karma system better. I also second the idea for being able to vote for a pic without having to dive into the comments page.
While a drop-down for the tags might help, I’d also suggest reducing the actual numbers of them that you have. You’re now starting to have too many tags for them to be useful for sorting.
Nested comments were very groovy, I hope they come back.
But congratulations on the improvements you’ve made – I think it looks a lot tidier than the old version.

1) banner – too busy, too busy in one spot. the pictures are cute but they should be all through the background of the banner at low transparencies, with, perhaps, one prominent picture off over in that spot to the right.
Further… I think ti should be all drawing, or all picture. Maybe you can offer different site ‘skins’..? (‘cheezdoodle’ and a ‘cheezcat’?
)
2) The logo in the upper left is nice, though the fact that the ‘s’ in has in on the second line bothersm e, though that couldj ust be a style thing… however, the fact that is the ONLY appearance of the logo boths me. and it sort of disagrees with the rest of the ‘style’… it’s great.. but see abouve recomendation for cheezdoodles.
3) BUSY! Banner add over the top, blogads and googleads to the left (with what looks like a inch and a half border of NOTHING to the left of THAT)… then 2/3 collums of STUFF on the right… the result is that the lolcats (and lolruses) are only about half of the horizonal space… How about putting the tags under the gogglesearch, the site news addn the buttons etc. or the other way around! and get rid of the white margins on either side of the page!!
4) possibly in contrast to the last: perhaps a background image? more cheezdoodles? perhaps similar to cuteoverload’s page design. boxes aruond the pictures so that it’s not too busy. but without leaving the page helplessly empty in spots
5) oh.. and can you love the ‘comments’s link to the bottom of the post? I couldnt’ find it earlier…
oh. as for amazon dropdowns. only if the most popular tags are at top
Re: getting rid of your “tagged for your convenience” tags and hiding them in a dropdown — yeah you’ll save space. I could compress my whole hard drive, and my system speed would go straight down the drain, but I’d save myself some space. I could move my family into a studio apartment… yeah I think you get the point.
Dropdowns only work with relatively short lists of very common terms. Even Amazon’s main dropdown is too long, and I don’t see anyone cutting down ICHC’s tags and retroactively converting them to the Queen’s English. (Don’t even think it). You can’t GUESS the way these tags are spelled, y’know; LOLspeak by definition isn’t consistent (sorry, Elfi & Anil) and it ain’t gonna be. So to find any tag, you kinda need to browse & skim. Dropdowns… aren’t friendly that way.
So, no provision for tag clouds on WordPress, eh?
Wow so many whiners!! My mother always said beggars can’t be choosers. It’s not your site so if you don’t like the new look just leave! OR start your own if you think you’re all that. The thing I don’t like about the newness is the comments people are making are pretty lame. Other than that, I think the site is great, I appreciate all the work that Cheez and Tofu do, and I thank them for doing it. Think about that when you want to rag about the site. At least try to say something good about it. Geez.

Yep, yep. They asked for feedback so I sat down with my morning coffee and gave the page a good, strong look over to determine what I saw as potential issues. I even thought about spending a good few hours tinkering up an alternate banner to show them what i mean… however, I decided that the amount of tiem I’d spend cutting the images out of the banner and preparing them to put into a new banner would be time severly wasted, as they’d have access to raw image files and could skip all the time consuming image tweaking and editing.
I deeply appreciate this website and think it’s fantastic. else I’d not have spent so much time replying to their request for feedback.

the “drawings” added to the header are funny, but the big red heart with the cheezburger kinda really jumped at me? i find that one a bit too colorful, the others are great!
