Polite Mode Now Available
Update 4-12-2007: Adding ?polite=yes / ?clean=yes / ?sfw=yes after ANY link _should_ turn on polite mode. Thanks for the suggestion Palmer.
Hi folks! After the large amount of feedback, regarding a picture I posted earlier this morning, I’ve developed a little safe-for-work filtering feature which we shall call “polite mode” (have a better name). Next to any post that has an offensive category/tag a small “polite: yes / no” bit of text will appear.
Clicking on the yes will turn on “polite mode” — which will make the site a tad more SFW. I’m also in the process of setting up a way to link someone directly to safe-mode as turning this on by default, isn’t what me or tofu want to do right now. This will not be the default mode for ICHC, yet it is developed for those who do not wish to see offensive material and want a cleaner experience.
If this gets good reception we may work it into other parts of the site. We aim to be responsive to your concerns. It may need to go through some visual tweaks over time.
I’ll also place the Polite mode question on the side bar if you wish to toggle it on/off.
For the coders, the server is baking a simple cookie. Evidence of said cookie (chocolate chips, crumbs, empty glass of milk) will turn on polite mode. If the cookie is eaten (eatsfwcookie()), or cannot be found (cookiejar == empty) -- then polite mode will be off. The cookie goes stale in 2 months from the date it's baked (60 seconds * 60 minutes * 24 hours * 60 days).
Might have been better had you never posted that original picture to begin with. I love this site because of its gentle good humor and the pictures of the animals. Quite honestly I found the picture in question objectionable. I can get garbage like that on the net anywhere else – I come here specically to escape that type of material. Or so I thought.
The humor here ranges from absurd / insane / nsfw to cute / sfw / cuddly. We can’t please everyone, the best we can do is put things in place when asked and let people decide for themselves.
I am sorry, but that picture is making me rethink looking at this site. You really jumped the shark on this one.
I understand the “we can’t please everyone” approach, but to me it seems like there’s enough out there that’s both SFW and funny that you don’t really need to go down the NSFW path. There are a million already macro’d pics out there, and people come up with witty new captions all the time. All the posts here that have been deemed offensive I haven’t found that funny, not because they are offensive, but because they’re not original or witty.
As for pleasing everyone, do you think anyone would complain if you just didn’t show NSFW stuff? Cute Overload is a popular site and probably shares some visitors with this site, and there aren’t posts over there begging for more pr0n.

Oh please. These are cat macros. They originated in sites that are very very not safe for work. Of course there’s going to be not work safe ones! Heck, what do you people think harbl means?!
I for one am against this sort of filtering. I’d be content with hiding the picture behind a link, just like that Bukkake one was a few hours ago. I just hope the site feed does not get affected by this new setting.

Why not just append ?polite=yes to the URL, and then parse for it in the HTTP vars?

Well, a little while ago, a lot of people complained because there were photos of cute animals between some female breasts (cleavage) posted. I’m serious. People went NUTS over this. One of ‘em in particular had a bit of the lower part of the breasts exposed, and boy did that post hurt my head.
I dislike the polite mode, but it’s the best way to ensure that offended folks will not get angry with the site owner(s).

I am ok with harblz. some people don’t like the harblz, i can understand that. It is just a matter of different sensibilities. This site is full of win and awesome, and so the polite mode sounds like a good way to solve this problem. Now if only we could solve the problem of that missing bukket…….
(just another thing, on other sites there are lolcat pics with captions centring around “stealing jobs” that I don’t find cool, and i hope they don’t find their way onto ICHC, but again that is just my opinion)

Not at present Wombert, but it’s on the list of todos…
, people have also asked for “surprise mode” where the titles of the pictures aren’t shown… so they get the full effect of the posts sans us ruining it for them with the caption (lol).

Just a suggestion, but maybe there could be the implementing of an option to register a username for the site?
People could just have user preferences for safe mode on/off, they could log in and not hafta types their name and e-mail when posting comments, save their favorite lolcats (loldogs, etc.), choose wether they want to have surprise mode on or off, blah blah blah.
Now, I’m fairly new and haven’t noticed… so if this already exists and I don’t figure it out before my comment gets locked… don’t think me too big a n00bz0r =P

I too had to look it up- I had the general idea what it meant but wanted to be sure. Yes, it’s a horrible and unthinkable to think of a kittun in that situation, but if people are going to be offended by something that they must already know the meaning for, or they too had to look it up, then you really need to take a chill pill and lighten up a bit. Life’s too short to get your panties in a bunch over something like that. Or else, get a hobby so you have something else to do than be on the net. Last I knew, this site was for fun, not serious issues.

One more thing. I know nothing about it because I was introduced to ICHC and LOLCATS after they went all blank. I wonder if this kind of crap is what made them shut down? Kudos on creating the polite mode. It’s a great choice between censorship and the freedom to post whatever you want. A smart move by some smart cats.

I agree. The reason I love ICHC is because it often does feature humor that’s a little dirtier, a little weirder, a little darker, or just generally more adult themed than cutsey-poo, oversaccharin “Just Hang in There, Baby!” kitten pictures. I’m not arguing for page after page of hardcore kitty pron, but I really hope youse guys don’t feel like you have to sanitize and boring-ize this site just to please a few moralizing whiners.

This site is being provided for the enjoyment of the Internet folks out of the kindness of Cheez and Tofu. They have gone out of their way to try to accomodate your complaints, and still you whine about how OMGOFFENDED! you are, ONOZ!
If you were paying for the privilege of looking at funny pictures of cats, you’d possibly have the right to throw a hissy fit about the content of the website. Since this website is provided to the Internet public free of charge, you don’t have much of a leg to stand on.
No one forces you to look at this website against your will. You don’t like the humor, fine. Take your mouseclicking elsewhere, and leave the rest of us in peace.

Yeah, we don’t. There were questions about whether or not the site was SFW…why are we spending this much time on the web when at work anyway?
All I have to say is the picture-in-question got the best reaction out of everyone in my office (we all check this site every day…there are about 100 of here, male and female). My boss finally even decided to start reading the feed day.

It has been my understanding that people who complain the most, are the ones with their own demons. Look at Jesse “Hymietown” Jackson. If you find something that offends you, there is a perfectly good reason why, you have issues you need to deal with. The picture in question points out an aspect of society. It’s not like the producer of the picture conjured up the act that offended you, he simply pointed it out. Honestly folks, if you are offended by something that doesn’t personally physically harm another person, just do the world a favor and live in a bomb shelter, and shelter the rest of the world from your ignorance.
I appreciate the notion of “safe mode” because my eight year old daughter likes to look at the pictures on the site. There are some facts of life that are appropriate for her to know now and some that I don’t want to have to explain for a while.

I enjoyed bukkake kitty. It was funny because it was unexpected, and also I got to feel clever because I know what bukkake means (and apparantly so does everybody else. They must have learned it somewhere else NSFW). There are some lolcats that don’t amuse me. Others are LOLLOLOLOLOLOL. If I come across one that is not LOLLOLOLOLOL I scroll on by. I can understand if people don’t want NSFW popping up in their faces so I guess the polite feature is a very good compromise. It’s a shame if people can’t accept that. No lolkitty is perfect for everybody. Except “love is over” kitty from a while back. He was the best. I miss him.

I like the idea of a “polite button.” I go to this site because I like the pictures of the cats and the wit of the captions. Call me old-fashioned, but I like my “kittehs” General Admission.

Again, in case anyone is still reading, in Japanese Culture, Bukkake is not primarily what you think it is, but rather to have any liquid sprayed on the face. My understanding is its only the English usage of the word that has the pron connotation. Thus, the post was technically SFW, its everyone’s dirty minds that are NSFW.
