My family doctor thought I had asthma as a kid.
Turned out it was EIB, and the inhalers were actually making it worse.
Went for a run one day while working up to Basic, had a coughing fit, hacked up some lovely red stuff, and haven’t had a problem since.
But seriously, those steroid inhalers are nasty business. Hopefully kitty doesn’t mind the burn in his chest too much.
Totally off topic, but what is EIB? The MD’s think my 5yr has asthma. Thanks!

i have teh azmah, too. i’m ok with my shorthair cat, but my best friend is in a bad domestic situation and i have her son’s cat for a bit. she’s got the longest hair and i’m dying here. cough, hack, wheeze. btw, i brushed her and she’s got an amazing amount of dander. looks like human dandruff. any suggestions?

Web search seems to indicate that EIB is Exercise-Induced Bronchospasm. I has the azmah too. I’ve heard of kittehs with it, but never knowed how they bes treated.

Heather: This may sound terrible… but here’s how I keepz mah 3 kitiz from getting too dandruffy….
1) canned food (not dry – it improves their skin so it’s not flaky)
2) WASH DAT KITI!!!
3) BRUSH DAT KITI BACKWARDS!!
Seriously, I know, sounds terrible but all 3 of mine actually ♥LOVE♥ it!! Okay, they hates the bathing, but they love the backwards brushing. It’s the only thing that Kismet will hold still for. they purr like MAD.
And you’d be amazed at the extra CAT you get off a kitty when you brush very thoroughly backwards.

I should add: Don’t try to brush kiti backwardz while kiti is still wet. Use a good kitti shampoo and scrub the stuffing outta that kitty (get help if you need it!!) let kitty dry off and get all fluffy, then brush brush brush brush brush. forwards, backwards, forwards, backwards, sideways, etc. Just brush like crazy. Kiti will thank you, also , as spring is probably making her shed extra too.

bothers my azmahs! is good. my kitteh also has the dandruffs.
teh vet says she not clean so good on her back. so i brushes her
and yes backwards brushing is favorite. she still has deh dry
skin, tho. but she is happy kittie anyway. she sheds, i brush,
she purrs. we is all happy.

As previously stated, EIB is Exercise-Induced Bronchospasm. Essentially, it produces asthma like symptoms during moderate to heavy aerobic exercise–makes running kind of a bummer.
Unlike asthma, EIB can be overcome–but I would really, really recommend consulting a physician before trying anything. I literally coughed up blood when I ran too hard or too long–but eventually, it just stopped, because I kept at it. Really don’t have a problem anymore–I just wouldn’t recommend my methods.

I tried that brushing backwards thing on my Lex kitty this weekend, and you were right, Elfnow! I got lots more kitteh off hims. This morning he decided he didn’t like it so much anymore and took his brush from me to bite it, but hey, maybe he’s not a morning kitteh.

My kitty died of asthma.
I just had a kitty die from asthma too. He hated the aero-kat mask (shown in the above pic). It helped for a while though.
My poor kitteh has teh asmah too. Has inhaler. So sad to seez him weezin! Jus diagnosed this year, at 7. Poor kitteh.
