    BANNOCH HAZ WIN.
    (Do not get our 16-yr-old started on Christopher Paolini.)
    (Also, avoid all mention of Dakota Fanning around our 14-yr-old.)
    (Just FYI.)

  21. stendhalismo says:

    overall, I think it’d be funnier and even more subtle if it was some Ayn Rand crap

    Atlas Shrugged, anyone?

  26. Bannoch says:

    @Shaungrl

    My problem isn’t with Paolini, it’s with plagiarism. When deliberate hack writing is rewarded with financial success, it deters those of us who are trying to approach the medium from a position of honest originality.

    But, that’s too serious for this picture, so…

    “Bring me the Dwarf! I want to toss him!”

    See… I didn’t get that from Eragon. The movie I didn’t see, but everyone said it wuz lyk SOOO ztarwerz, but I sure didn’t get that from the book. Maybe the basic theme (awkward outcast kid becomes better than everyone else b/c he has secret gift / special powers / good soul / etc etc ) has been recycled a few times … but that’s a pretty common theme in those books, not overt plagiarism.

    That book was also edited and edited and re-edited, I think possibly some of his most original stuff was probably edited out. :P

    I haven’t gotten through Eldest yet, though… I have been too flaked to sit and read lately. :P

  28. Bannoch says:

    Ah, well, if that’s his only problem… ;)

    Seriously, though, his books were published by a company owned by his parents. If my mommy and daddy had a press, I’d have published something more meaningful than a few short stories and scholarly articles by now too.

    /jealous
