Donations / Server / Tears & Frustration
We are working on a donation page, it’ll be ready this week! We were reluctant to put one up, but from the looks of it — you guys want your lolcats and are willing to help support a server move. We are very happy to hear this. Stay tuned!
When the site goes down — Ice cream. We’re actively hunting out for the ICHC’s new home. Late night phone calls to tier 1 providers, learning server technology, it’s a big lesson. And we’ll lick it soon.

Thank you to all the email submissions of pictures! You folks have really kept us busy (this is a good thing)!
If we do not respond to each submission, please don’t take it the wrong way — we love them, there are many to go through wouldn’t it be nice if there was a simpler way to submit them (;))
If we have offended you for not replying fast enough, frequently enough, or replying period, take this announcement as our thanks. I am tasked with working out a way to let you know we got received your image, it will also be nice to be notified if it will go, or your picture is gigantic and crashed my computer… lol. We’ll work on being more responsive. Keep sending em in.

Two new burgers – Teriburger and Vacaburger
Please welcome teriburger and vacaburger!
Teriburger (Teri burger is a type of burger very popular in Hawaii. The Teri part comes from Teriyaki, a sweet soy sauce generally applied to meats.) has immense amount of design experience. Vacaburger (when we asked vacaburger for a burger name he was adamant about using this name, vaca is cow in spanish and his reasoning for the name are supposedly long standing and ancient, possibly to be buried in ichc lore until another time) is an aspiring projammer, and IT/tech geek like me (cheezburger)…
We hope for good things to come.

i agree with katie. and perhaps in terms of merchandise, you could consider shirtz too pleez? maybe select a few of your fav kittehs and then letting the people vote, with the winner gracing a t-shirt? i know it worked for teh qte, and i can never have enough cute shirts!

Also, shirts with just the lolcatz pics can be designed to look a little more professional than just a square on a shirt. That would differentiate the real deal from the fake Cafe Press store.

Have you guys done a log file analysis to figure out exactly where all your bandwidth usage is going? Is blocking hotlinking not an option? Maybe you could block just certain places (like myspace) if all your transfer is being consumed by just a few places?
How much bandwidth does this site use? More than a shared DreamHost account can handle, I guess?
This is one of my most favorite sites ever, in the history of life. It makes me happy to see that there is more awesomeness to come.

I’d buy a cami. mugs and a hoodie with the graphics by Teriburger. So cute. Especially if it had the word ‘Caturday’ on it and the bendy cat under it from the little snippet posted.

Raquel, you’re on the right path. Because many of these pictures aren’t our photos, animals, or caption work (hope you’re not surprised, we gather and sift through A LOT). This brings up a very interesting legal concern from us at ICHC. How can we consciously print a t-shirt with a picture we didn’t “work” (in the legal sense) to create? Granted we’ve helped make a large amount of humor available and generated interest it still isn’t right.
Me, tofu, and teri has talked about this and we’ve come up with some creative, smrt, and honest ideas about how to not steal other peoples work and provide well-designed, copyright non-violating merch.
Your comments on forthcoming solutions will be appreciated.
You could possibly ask for permission when posts are submitted; i.e. a link or check box that says “do you allow your pic to be used on merch”. Just a thought
Yeah, I was wondering how you wanted to work with the legal aspect of it. I’m sure you could get permission from some people (especially from readers who created the pics as long as they used their own cats) to use them on a shirt.

What if maybes you had peoples voting on which lolcats pics they like best for merch, but instead of using the actual pics, had Teriburger do an artist’s rendering/interpetation of said pics (along with orginal art which looks lolsum). Maybe that could make legal happys?
Yeah, legally using the lolcats themselves could be a problem.
But my pics are my own dog, so I would hand over tee-shirt rights. And a high-res image.

I would give permission to use my catz photos on shirts. I have lots I haven’t submitted, although they may not actually be the funniest, or at least I haven’t thought of funny captions for them.
And how do we go about making donations? Please use PayPal. It makes me nervous to have to use anything other than PayPal.
I is still sulking. Why? Because every single one I’ve made involves cute furballs that do not belong to me. Please consider those of us who have becaptioned many a cat/hamster/etc but who do not have our own pets to use as lolcat victims. *cue violins*

Merchandise is a great idea- as far as the legal stuff, you’d be best off using pics that people made themselves and gave you rights to. I’d be happy to hand over rights on photos if I had any you wanted.
Cafepress is okay, but their selection is kinda lame- no black shirts, etc. There’s a site called Zazzle (http://www.zazzle.com) that you can design your own stuff and they sell it, but you’d only get a small percentage of the money. The selection of merchandise is great, though.
Anyway- keep up the great work, guys- you RULE.
