Great photo, but please give credit where credit is due. This pic is thanks to the wonderful crewe at stuffonmycat.com!

    • kitisitr says:

This is not cute. This is not funny. Humour does not justify this. This is serious mistreatment of animals even if the photographer was able to stage the shot without harming the cat. And as has been said before, the tacit approval given to stunts like this by promoting them as humour could very well lead to animals being harmed by less competent imitators.
Do not bother to respond to this comment. I will not be reading the moronic outburst of mockery that it will no doubt provoke because I am leaving now and will not be back. I can not condone this kind of abuse by my presence.
To those of you who are not completely hardened: please think about what you are encouraging here.

      • Taldar says:

I must disagree. If the cat was not harmed, then there is no harm done. So I don’t really see why one should get upset.

But then again, it is one’s personal decision whether to view a site or not, so I can’t disagree about kitisitr’s choice.

        • pipercubbie says:

How do you know no harm was done?

How much harm qualifies as “harm?”
          Abuse is abuse is abuse.
Sociologists know that people that abuse pets also abuse people.

How much harm could be done to you before you’d consider it harmful?

          This is DEFINITELY NOT funny.

          • Emily says:

There’s always a possibility that this kind of thing happens to the poor cat all the time and while not PHYSICAL harm was done, I think we all know that kittehs are people too =) and get scared just like we do. I personally don’t like these kinds of photos but I’m also not going to freak out about it either. I just ask that people remember that pets have feelings – they get scared, they get excited…also, the funniest pictures here aren’t staged.

      • Bandit.Kitteh says:

Hai, dont be so alarmed, kitteh safe. They be takin da pic and removin the glass

      • That Damn Cat says:

        let me guess. Peta member?

        stuff it.

        • JamesRam says:

          Amen!

        • auntiecoagulant says:

YOU stuff it. Not everyone that loves animals is a PETA member and I’m tired
of this trend of PETA haters. Do you even know why you hate PETA? Yes
because someone you perceive as cool hates them too so you have to
follow along. Try FM radio sometime and quit listening to stupid right-wing
rhetoric. Why are you even here if you don’t like animals? Sounds like
you’re practically a tree huggin’ hippie PETA member yourself! I’ll go ahead and state
that I am NOT a member of PETA lest you lash-out by calling me one. Not
that I’m going to bother reading your banal response anyway.

          • Sean says:

Actually i hate them because they do stupid things like getting mad over a fly getting swatted or calling fish “sea kittens”.

          • FetzlsMom says:

PETA promotes killing of pets and other animals. Do your research, they are a bunch of militant, power-hungry, clueless morons who want to FORCE everyone to think like they do. They are not friend to animals, they are an extremist group of freaks.
We will exploit women, but not animals? Nice consistency.

      • king says:

…..u no that photo was photoshopped dont u?
we did somthing like this 4 a school multimedia project, he just got a photo of a cat & put it over a photo of an empty glass container

        • nowherenear says:

This blatently isn’t photoshopped because the cat’s face is pressed up against the golass and it’s feet arecrossed over, and it’s hackles are up
          Do not want!

      • Pugiron says:

Luckily the cat is smarter than you and isn’t upset

      • Christyy Cuddles says:

        Hey doofus,
Instead of worrying about this ONE cat who 99.9% wasn’t harmed,
why don’t you go join a volunteer group saving actual endangered people and pets?
        duh.
ppl who come on this site love cats.
        obviously.
no one would cause harm to a cat.
        especially not on purpose.
the most harm this did was make the cat be passive agressive for a day and tear up a shoe.

        kthxbi.

        =]

This is way funny gotta say.
        cute kitty too .
        :]

        • KT says:

Yes, well, he does look cramped, but I honestly don’t see any reason to get
upset. Especially, as Christyy Cuddles said, there are much worse cases of
animal abuse going on. I can’t help feeling like you’re overreacting.

      • Cellie says:

to kitisitr: dey r ok. u just lift teh glass and dent teh kitteh alrite. lyke hold teh top part and den teh kitteh free

(translayshin: they’re okay. just lift the glassa nd the kitty alright. it’s like you hold the top part and the kitty’s free)

      • nyeah? says:

        maybe the cat deserved it

        • Hetty says:

No animal deserves to be shut in such a vulnerable position. However I don’t think this cat was harmed at all. It looks like it’s rather annoyed, but both the photographer and the cat know no harm will be done. Cat’s don’t have claustrophobia like humans, at least none that I’ve met.

      • darien says:

        ass hole its funny

      • nikkiecea says:

the cat was not shoved in there you can see the rings on the carpet it was placed on the cat prob for the picture it looks like a cake cover

      • Teh Attic cats Cuzinz says:

This is a bonzai kitty all growd up.

  11. rhenzei says:

    lolz! Snot mean, sfunny.

Cats are remarkably resilient creatures, and f’sho that’s not causing kitty any pain. His furry li’l world got awfully weird for a minute, but whatev. He didn’t even waste half a life on this one.

Da ASPCA bots wif no senses of humor should not have kittahs ’cause they donts knowz how funny dey is. I meanz, I has mah kittah stuffed in a beer bottle right now and she’s not complaining. I keed I keed. No flame plz, k thx.

  12. Cat-astrophe says:

For those who are concerned about the safety of the kitty, please don’t worry. SOMC is very careful about only posting pictures where no kitty has been harmed, and submissions are by wondeful folks who really love their kitties. I’m sure the loving owner who did this took it off as soon as the pic had been snapped.

I would imagine all cat owners have been a little silly with our kitties at some point, much to the kitty’s dismay! Personally, I love the floof factor on this one!

    • PrairieGhost says:

lol Precisely! I do crazy stuff to my cats all the time, but nothing that would harm them or cause them to dislike me. They let me do things like what was done to this cat because they trust me, and I would never abuse that trust…
…’cept for the time I dressed my male Corgi up in pink baby clothes, but he’s a dog, so he doesn’t count. >:3

  13. dan says:

    @Cat-astrophe: exactly.

  14. MiLeS says:

    Haha nice one :)

  15. laura says:

    hahahahahhaha i lovvvvvess it

  16. Adam says:

lol Retahn, sylvia plath cat ftw.

yah, i has seen cats do weirder stuff than this. if this cat was mad, it would be all GRARRARRRARRARRR an would scratch holy hell out of everything in the room. this cat is probalby just all “wtf????? i iz in bell jar????” an then teh photographer removed teh bell jar an teh cat went off in serch of cheezburgers.

  17. Jaime says:

If that cat was that po’d it would have backed over and out…I can’t even get my cat in the cat carrier half the time, much less install a force field, if he’s not up for it!!

  18. Malia says:

    OMG THANK YOU

  19. Natasha says:

Even if the owner removed the glass immediately after the picture was taken, it was a cruel idea to begin with. That cat looks miserable, and there is nothing humorous about mistreating animals for your own pleasure, even if it is for a brief moment. And the cats are resilient comment? Most animals are resilient, including of course humans. Let’s hope you wouldn’t suffocate your best friend for a few minutes just for shits and giggles.

Yes, i do have a sense of humor. And I love this website. I hope you continue to promote pictures that capture cats and kittens in their natural ridiculous moments.

    • fishamaphone says:

Wait, what? So you’ve never played punch-buggy? Or the “slaps” game? Given a friend an Indian-burn? been a little too agressive in a pillow-fight? Dangled your little sister over a 20-foot drop just to see her squirm?

Face it, part of being a friend is doing things to your friends that they don’t like. I hold my cat friends in the same regard as my human friends. I’ll hold my cat with my on the couch while I’m watching TV, even though she obviously wants out of the room, but I’ll sit on my sister even though I weigh twice as much as her.

If I were to put my cat on some sort of untouchable pedestal like you seem to, I would never be able to relate to her. She’d be this furry little thing that hides in corners, eats food I put out for her, and poops on my sister’s bed instead of the litterbox.

      • JLuve82 says:

Yes! Thank you! kittehs are our friends and we luvers them lots! That’s why we do silly things to them, and dogs, and our people friends, and lolrunses, and i could go on all day. But still we do it ’cause we love them and they love us too. They have their wtf moments, walk on ur face while ur sleepin and move on. and as someone noted above, the kitteh must be cool w/it or it would not have been in the position in the first place. All who have EVER owned a cat (excuse befriended a cat) know that you can never get a cat to do something it doesn’t want to w/o losing some skin.

    • kitisitr says:

Hear hear!!! I too hope ICHC continues to promote pictures that capture cats and kittens in their NATURAL ridiculous moments.

      • Sydney says:

I thought you weren’t coming back…it was much nicer here when you weren’t here…go away now, stop complaining, cancel you’re internet service and throw away your computer. While you’re at it, cancel any newspaper subscriptions and cable services you might have as well. The cat is ok! it’s a large jar with a furry cat…the fur to air ratio is enough for a picture. Go fight for something that is actually cruel, fight against Bush.

    • Serraphin says:

I’ve seen kitties more upset over their owners putting them into stupid costumes, yet this is supposedly worse? It’s not like they keep their cat in this jar all day. Get over yourself and go overreact elsewhere.

  20. Etralus says:

Somehow, I doubt this is what Aesop had in mind when he wrote “Belling the Cat.” Nonetheless, very effective.

    ..

    • Beacon says:

True, but that doesn’t mean that it’s in danger of it in this case.
There’s more than enough O2 for that kitty for a good three minute span, at least. While it’s not healthy to test the limits of that, a 30 second span would not be harmful to the kitty. The only thing that happened was there was a shocked kitteh in a glass jar.

  23. mental18 says:

I hate these pics they make me sick

  24. Misty says:

Yes when that pic made me sick as well. That was horrible and mean, why would you do that to your pet? Just for the fun of it? Only a sick mind.

  25. EII says:

    i hate it ,its horribule

  26. MissMe says:

I bet you anything that keetee is still alive.

And i bet you anything that said keetee is very much over its glassy dome.

And I bet that cat lurvs its owner just as much as it did.

You are all silly to freak out about such a trivial matter.
I mean, sure. I bet the cat didn’t like it very much. But hey, you face uncomfortable shit in your life.

    You get over it :)

    • Fox says:

exactly! As stated numerous times, the cat can back out, knock the glass over, something to get out. It’s not completely helpless. If my cats Do Not Want, it Does Not Happen. If it does, I’m usually bleeding by the end, and it was important (like a pet carrier, or the harness and leash my vets office requires..)

  27. Lilli says:

This isn’t funny. I find most pictures on Icanhascheezburger.com to be silly and make me laugh, but not this. Though the cat may not have been harmed, I don’t think that this is acceptable and, if you care about animals and abusive behavior, neither should you.
Just putting my opinion out there.
Don’t even bother to respond because I won’t read it :D

    • Bri says:

I love how these people that are offended feel compelled to share their opinions, expecting everyone else to “listen,” but state flat out that they won’t give others the same respect.

      I mean… lolz.

      • Mr. Katzorz says:

I agree completely… if u make a post and expect people not to minimize it as soon as the see ur name then actually see what they have 2 say in return and dont flame pics with out knowin the details first. *cough* kitisitr! *cough*

  28. Astatine says:

“WTF MY FACE IS FLAT ENOUGH THX”

“you bumped my nose on way in, haet you :(

  29. Rosi says:

    Hai,

I work in animal rescue and I can assure you that this is not anything close to abuse. Cats are extremely flexible ( as we all know) and like small spaces, as shown here:

    http://icanhascheezburger.com/2007/08/05/teh-kitteh-jar/

This can be a real danger when you’re having construction done and have holes in your walls or floors or open pipes or ducts, as they are very curious (I won’t dig up the old adage, but you know it). I can’t tell you how many time I’ve pulled kittehs out from behind drywall.

In terms of air supply, the cat has quite enough for at least several minutes, though I’m sure it wasn’t under there even that long. It was probably a bit peculiar for him, but he was not in any way traumatized.

Nonetheless, thanks for your concern as I have seen to many cases of real neglect and abuse to complain about people being overly vigilant in protecting animals.

  30. tm says:

It’s only abuse if you don’t eat the meat.

  31. SexZee says:

  32. Mr. Katzorz says:

As long as kitteh, wasnt mistreated i suppose we should just accept it, besides, what’s done is done and anyway, my cat did this to herself once lol, didnt have a camera tho… :(

  36. rptwinkie says:

um, grow up? it’s funny? It was a few seconds, and now it’s over with? Like that’s never happened to YOU. You’re right, i didnt like it when i was struggling and screaming when my brother would bind me in a blanket and constrict me there for several minutes… is this the same? Do you think the cat would “hang out” until they could put the jar on? If the cat didn’t like it, the cat would leave. The end.

  37. Theresa says:

I don’t think the cat was hurt, and I am sure the owner did not mean anything bad by doing it. But, I don’t really like the photo either. It just seems to portray cruelty even if it was just a quick shot. We don’t know how long kitty was in there.. I guess thats why. I am sure the kitty is fine though, and just shook himself/herself off and went to look for Cheezburger. :)

  38. Lyn says:

PICTURES ABUSING ANIMALS SHOULD NOT BE SHOWN ON THE SITE. THE CAT IS IN DISTRESS AND THERE CAN NOT BE MUCH AIR IN THERE. DON’T PROMOTE ABUCE OF ANIMALS AS CUTE.

    • Fox says:

Erm, we ‘re not. We’re saying putting a jar over your cat for a few minescule seconds is, though! =D

I’m sorry, I seriously doubt the cat was kept in there for much longer than just to snap a photo.

Considering my cats manage to stuff THEMSELVES into spaces even smaller than that, I think that cat will be just find.

By the same standards, putting your dogs in those tacky sweaters is also cruel and abusive.

Pull your heads out of your asses, plzkthxbai.

  43. Stevie says:

I don’t know which is funnier, the photo or the whining about abuse. Seriously. I’ve seen some messed-up things happen to cats, as I’ve had many many many cats in my lifetime, and many people I’ve known (including young children) have had or had access to cats. Until you’ve seen what I’ve seen and actually witnessed cats/pets being taken away from a house because of cruelty, then you don’t even know cruelty. Just like has been said, you’d hurt a friend in a fun way, right? Noogies, indian sunburns, dunking them underwater? This cat looks a little pissed but I’ve seen cats curl into the tiniest little spaces, sometimes squeezing in four or so at a time, and they’re all, everyone of them, perfectly fine now. So quit whining. Seriously.

    • Futch says:

it may not qualify as “abuse” but it’s still mean. It can’t be comfortable for the cat to be stuffed into a container barely big enough to hold it. Imagine if you were just sitting there, then someone put a fishbowl on your head so small your nose was pressed against the glass. It really wouldn’t hurt you but you’d still be like “what the hell you prick.” Just because the cat doesn’t come out of physically injured doesn’t make it okay to do it. My brother used to drop cats down our laundry chute. The cats weren’t hurt, but they never went near my brother again so it obviously affected them. Cats don’t know when a jokes being played on them, and they DON’T like to be forced into anything. Most don’t even like to be picked up. All the see is an unwarranted disruption of what they were originally doing, and they either get pissed or are permanently scared of whoever disturbed them. They don’t forget people who were mean to them, EVER.

And I’ve had a lot of cats as well. One of them is the ancestor of half the cats in the metro area, so we had dozens of cats a year going in and out. Combine that with a schizophrenic brother with sever anger and control issues, and you get cats dying in ways to make you vomit so don’t think you’re special just because you’ve seen a few malnourished cats. The cats I’ve seen abused didn’t have a chance to get taken away. So get off your god damned high horse and stop being condescending to what others consider a serious issue. Fracking Aardvark

      • FetzlsMom says:

Maybe you should have had the “ancestor” fixed so as to not encourage feline overpopulation then, eh, Futch? Self-righteous much?
Sounds like your schizo bro did more damage to you than a few moments under glass did to smoosh-faced kitty.
Please take your emotional and mental instability to a psychiatric professional and stop posting in public forums.

  44. meowy says:

i dont think this is funny at all.
just like those pics were people dress up their pets to get a “funny” picture… staged pics are so lame. and this is, wether actual harm was done or not, just the wrong treatment of an animal (and btw:no, im not a peta member, just a cat fan)

    pets are no toys

im pretty sure that no one of you would like it if he was forced to do something, no matter if the intended action is supposed to be funny or not.

Does this healthy cat look abused? No, he just is a little PO’d at his hooman right now. he was probably under that lid for 30 seconds. when he was done he got lots of hugs and treats.

  52. BarefootGlen says:

    NOT FUNNY……IN ANY WAY…I AM NOT IMPRESSED…

    Cheers Glen.

  53. Darathem says:

    Well, here I go again.

There are two points here: Let’s look at the validity of each.

One side claims that it’s all in good fun.

The other claims that it’s animal abuse, and any type of abuse is wrong- whether it was meant in jest or not.

    Now: My side.

The pic itself borders on grey. It wasn’t photoshopped, which means it might have been hazardous to the cat in question.

The cat probably wasn’t very comfortable, and it was obviously done against its will.
Funny for the watcher, maybe. Funny for the cat? No.

All abuse happens because what is done is not by the victim’s will or consent. That’s the definition of abuse. In that way, the cat had its rights violated.

This isn’t a big deal for most humans, because they don’t treat their cats like other humans, so that entire speech is probably lost on the majority of you- to those of you who understand, kudos.

The deed itself wasn’t that big a deal. The issues it caused the cat were momentary- in fact, I find it likely that the poor creature probably didn’t remember it the next day, as such things don’t last long on the minds of kitties.

    …However…
Any violation of any right of any animal or human is wrong unless justified by a previous action violating another right or core code. Included in this category is hunting for sport and not for food, and taking advantage of those weaker than ourselves for our own benefit without any foreseeable like benefit for the secondary party involved- without, and this is important- the secondary party’s consent or obvious approval.

Cat did not like. Cat was abused. Dara is not amused in the least.
If a human was trapped in a glass such as this and obviously unhappy, said audience may have had less trouble relating. I concur.
This picture is all wrong. People might say what they like about this entire speech, but this picture, and the owner’s treatment of its cat, are both wrong.

    • Annalisa says:

      Dara,

Thanks for your comment–it was right on.

Also, I’d just like to say that I think it’s strange for people to get so upset about the fact that people don’t like this picture. There’s nothing wrong with people being concerned, even overly concerned, that animals are treated with respect and kindness.

      • darkninja says:

anna how can you say “There’s nothing wrong with people being concerned, even overly concerned” people are being accused of abuse when its clearly not. how would you like to be accused of molesting a child because it was on your lap even thou it would be plainly obvious to most you were not, there would be some that see inappropriate conduct on your part. i just think its dumb of people to get all upset over a jar on a cat what if some1 just photoshops the jar out huh then what i bet everyone would have just thought it was a weird looking cat but no some1 has to say its abuse which its not. i as a human get abuse done to me all the time did u ever have to get a flu shot you didnt want i mean its natural that you will be forced to do things you dont want im sure the owners have done things for their pets they did not want any relationship is about give and take so i think having some fun with the cat at the expense of what nothing some dignity at worst is just fine kthnx

My kitten gets herself into worse situations than this by herself. I think right now she’s sandwiched herself between 2 couch cushions to take a nap, while curled up and upside down with her tail in the air.

You’re right, cats are people to and mah kitteh is our fur baby. Think of all of the horrible pictures and poses we make kids do. Or the kind of stuff that models do.

PETA is not here to stop silly stuff like this. PETA is about stopped a widespread gross mistreatment of animals such as fur coats (mass killing for fashion), animal testing, and poor farm conditions.

This cat was not harmed, so deal with it. Great picture.

  62. i has an issue says:

All I know is if someone put bodyhugging glass bowl over me I’d be seriously freaking out.

  63. emceemk says:

As a long-time cat owner, I can attest to the fact that owners “torture” their animals in “retaliation” for being victimized by their pets, or really, just for laughs. It’s all in good fun, any reasonable adult witnessing the event knows that the kind of activity I’m talking about falls on the safe side of the line. If at the end of the acivity the cat looks annoyed, you’re fine. If the cat looks scared, you’ve either crossed it or are just about to– so stop.
Years ago I had a cat that loved to be poked in the head with a pencil. Lo-o-oved it. So we poked away. Now I have a cat that is afraid of shoe sounds. Unreasoning paranoia type fear. So I dump the shoes when I come in the house, and we’re doing a little kitty desensitization training. Kitty will let you know.
And I tell you, I’d give my left nut to be able to poke Zonker in the head with a pencil one more time. Rest in peace, pencil boy.

Find something real to get upset about.
