actualy just found this picture and thought i would add .. this is on parliment hill Ottawa Ontario Canada. next to the houses of parliment there is a repilca of the buildings, which is inhabitted by maybe a dozen or more cats and looked after by the Members of parliemnt as well as groundskeeping staff … cool place … kittties in government

1) cats can get out of trees by themselves EASILY.
2) some cats climb trees for fun, or for self defense (AKA FERAL CATS)

little known fact is that a quarter of all the trees in the eastern Unites States were once cat-trees, but a blight accidentally introduced from China killed them all. Occasionally in the deep woods a cat-tree will sprout from the roots of an old dead tree, but the blight usually kills it before the kitties are weaned. That’s why there are so many squirrels in the woods now.
