Absorption is a route by which substances can enter the body through the skin. Along with inhalation, ingestion and injection, dermal absorption is a route of exposure for toxic substances and route of administration for medication. Absorption of substances through the skin depends on a number of factors, the most important of which are concentration, duration of contact, solubility, physical condition of the skin and part of the body exposed. Certain substances called carriers can be used to greatly increase the amount of another substances that is able to penetrate the skin.

Yeah, but that’s not how kittens soak up liquids. It gets pulled up into their fur by capillary action and most of it stays right there, clinging to all that surface area, not getting absorbed into their bodies. I doubt these coffee cups are filled with DMSO!

Let the absorption stand!
How someone can believe kitten fur is hollow and that the liquid is pulled up by capillary action, but take offense at the thought that it’s being absorbed through the pores in their tiny kitten skin, well, it’s beyond me! Maybe they’re absorbing it by OSMOSIS. Maybe it is the Bernoulli effect, where the blood rushing around in their little bodies is creating a vacuum and sucking the liquid in through the pores, or the hollow furs, or WHATEVER. Maybe it’s cold fusion in a cup revisiting us, and they’re producing free energy. Gasp! Maybe there’s no liquid in the cups at all!!!! Maybe it is a joke!?!?!!

Absorption = permeation, and NEED NOT be inclusive of capillary intake. Sponges absorb.
Adsorption = liquid clinging to solid (in this case.) Here, inclusive of the part of the hair to which liquid clings, but not the pores which collect water.
Hair is porous, and will be permeated by the liquid. It also has some solidity, onto which liquid will cling. Either ad- or -absortion is correct, unless one is specifying the surface under consideration to be skin, for the purpose of a medical diagnosis or treatment.
