Actually, is NOT deprecated. It is used for ‘italics’, and is correct in this case. is for ‘emphasis’ and has no set style, just that most browsers format it as italics.

Actually there is a difference when the computer reads it aloud. Italicized text is not read differently than standard text, whereas emphasized text is emphasized. The same goes for bold and strong.
