Um, I think it’s not so much offensive as it is poorly put together. Mesa Verde has so many other facets that could be turned into a smart joke that wouldn’t be viewed as offensive to Native Americans, Muslims or anyone. This picture is just really kinda lame.

First, Mohammad (pbuh) did go up to Mount Hira to reflect on the world and God. Seems like Mount Hira looks a lot like Anasazi ruins. (see link)

Don’t say “How can you be offended, it’s just a cat pic” because it’s NOT just a cat pic. It’s a cat pic that somebody chose to politicize by the caption they chose. Don’t blame me for noticing that you’ve got an obnoxious political message in there. YOU brought politics into the funny pages with YOUR stupid crap, not me.
I’m not saying it’s offensive to Muslims, I’m saying it’s annoying to ME, an AMERICAN because of these reasons:
1. It’s obviously made by an American, and a stupid one at that. On the WORLD-WIDE WEB, this helps perpetuate the myth that Americans in general are as stupid as the asshat who made this kittehlols.
2. By implying that Mohammed is watching over “the Jihad” (which reminds us that Stupid Americans think Jihad means whitey-killin’) it reinforces the stupid-American stereotype that we’re not smart enough to differentiate between Islam and violent extremism.
3. By mistaking a Native American site for a Muslim site, it reinforces the stereotype that Stupid Americans can’t tell deserts or brown people apart.
So I would just like to remind all the viewers who AREN’T in the good ol’ U S of A: Let’s try not to judge each other by the actions of one or two pricks.

I think images like these are causing serious religious conflict and undermining community cohesion. Just yesterday, my cat saw this image and then took a shit on local Christian churches door step. The Priest’s dog then retaliated and pissed on my cat flap.
On one level, I have no idea how to take this.
The picture itself seems harmless enough- whether the ruins are native american, or middle eastern in nature seems above and beyond the issue at heart.
There are quite a few sides to this interesting debate, so let me, for a second, hit the neutral zone.
I can easily see how many might find this picture offensive. But then, no one forces anyone to come to this site and look at these pictures. In that case, perhaps this might be rated PG-13 on the off chance that someone might decide not to look at it? It could have ‘religious reasons’ printed under it in parenthesis, if anyone needed a reason.
On the other hand, it’s an image with a cat photoshopped into a picture of ruins with a stupid- if mildly amusing- caption printed underneath it. If someone can’t handle it, I doubt it would ruin their day. It’s a picture for cripes sake. Not a new holy book, or a hint as to the second coming. I myself tend not to be very religious.
To get yourself worked up over something like this seems rather pointless. Either look at it, or don’t. No one holds a gun to your head. It was meant to be funny. The person in question may have had bad taste, and yes, I can see how it might offend, but I don’t think that, in a site like this- with so many other things to be offended by- it really is all that big of a deal.
However…
Religion is a personal matter, and a good many people will not take it as I do. Perhaps this picture really is better scrapped.
