NEDM and the elements in that picture come from YTMND circa summer/fall 2006, even though the specific pic comes from Fark. it originated when a user posted a video of a barning cat with music from doom playing in the background. one of the comments was “not even doom music can let me 5 this.”
just so everybody is aware of the history behind it.
What ACTUALLY happened was a certain video called “Cat Brutality” was going around the net. Eventually a YTMND user named Baron uploaded a site of a gif image featuring certain parts of the video accompanied by the new DooM music from the first level with the zoom text saying “PWNED!”. Another user named titanium-gecko was appalled to find that people give the site a rating of 5 stars, titanium-gecko downvoted all the users who had upvoted the users who gave the site a 5. One user named Spotz was extremely frustrated by this and exclaimed to titanium-gecko that the only reason he upvoted the site was because of the irony that the image was accompanied with DooM music. titanium-gecko left the now legendary comment on Spotz’ test site “Okay Spotz. Since you do not “condone” burning kitten your sites have been 3′D until further notice. Still… nothing justifies 5′ing burning kittens. Not even Doom music.”. Large groups of YTMNDers found this comment quite humourous. Then one day, a user named moheevi created the original NEDM site. Others followed on until it became a fad. So here we are, this picture is just an example of the fad and your story isn’t exactly right.

YTMND no longer has the original NEDM video. The authorities removed it off the internet in quick hours.
But there’s a video where they are burning a TMX elmo to death. Not as cruel, not as funny either.
But the music the NEDM ( All happycat versions ) is quite catchy.
