The first time I saw this I was a gonner, but I just have some vague memory of the tune. What is it from? A TV Show? A Cartoon? Does anyone know the name so I could search it?

Most of you got it wrong actually.. Its a old looney tunes cartoon about a owl in a singing contest he likes singing in a jazzy style but his poppa wants him to sing classical
The original is a Looney Tunes cartoon, but Trey and Matt borrowed the song and dance (without attribution that I can remember) for the first South Park episode. Having seen the original cartoon, I was rolling on the floor at the reference.
According to the YouTube link below, the full cartoon is also on the “Happy Feet” DVD as an extra. Now I have two reasons to get that DVD…

To set the record straight: this song was written by Yip Harburg and Harold Arlen. It was popularized by Cab Calloway in the 1930s. Other uses came after that.

Seeing this caption immediately evoked memories of that singing owl kid I saw years ago. Apparently I’m not the only young guy (21) who remembers that cartoon. (And I’ve never seen Happy Feet, so I didn’t know about the DVD-extra thing.)
