*sigh* R’tard is never a joke. There are so many other ways to mock that using something that is a reality for many people and families is simply not funny. You’re a brunette? Wouldn’t you find it just MILDLY offensive if people used “brunette” to mean “stupid, ugly, and unfortunate”? Same thing here, only moreso.

I think this posting is highly offensive to people with mental disabilities, and to anyone who cares about such people. I have lodged a complaint, hoping it would be removed, but it hasn’t. The rest of ICHC content is blissfully non-offensive; why does this one need to persist? If you agree, please complain too. Maybe it’ll get removed eventually.
It’s always “this one”. isn’t it? You people need to grow a thicker skin. You don’t like this one, the deiabetics don’t like fat cat, I’m sure the Vegans find the notion of “cheezburgers” offensive, and so on and on into oblivion. Well, guess what? If every one of you people who find a picture offensive because you “care about” somebody or you are “living with” a condition were able to get that pic removed, there would be no ICHC, or any other website for that matter. It’s called free expression, and censorship is un-American. If you don’t like it, don’t view it, and by all means, speak out against it…but who in hell are YOU to lobby for its removal?

The r-word is not a joke. Just like when you use the n-word, you are making fun of a group of people who has no control over what they were born with. What makes it even worse than using the n-word is that black people can stand up for themselves, many people born with mental retardation cannot.
In my experience, people who say “Jeez, lighten up! Its just a joke” are the people who scream the loudest if you make a joke about their group.
Firestar, you may be right that the person who posted the picture didn’t mean to BE offensive, but you are wrong that we are “just deciding to TAKE offense” Smacking a derogatory label on someone is a symptom of ignorance, not humor.

I take offensive at you being offended by the person who didn’t mean to offend. I think if we just don’t talk to each other there will be no way for anyone to offend each other. And I’m sorry if mute people are offended by my no talking suggestion. Because no matter what I say or do someone can be offended. So who’s responsible for the offense, the offender or the offended. Can people be too easily offended, Yes. Can people be insensitive and offend people, Yes. Is there a middle ground where people can be more sensitive and other lighten up, of course.
Wow its a cute picture of a cat with a little caption. It’s not a hate speech against mentally challenged people. There is no possible way to ‘mock’ that picture without using something that is in fact “a reality for many people.” I don’t know about the whole brunette thing but in case you haven’t noticed, people do use “blonde” to describe a dumb and oblivious person. And in my experience when somebody blonde is present when somebody makes a blonde joke, they don’t freak out about how politically incorrect it is. Instead they laugh at it because its no big deal. When people start posting in depth hate articles on retards (yes I used the r-word omg!) then you have a right to be offended, and I will even join you because that is wrong. But this is harmless, and ‘r-tard’ isn’t even a word!! If we can all learn to laugh at ourselves than there wouldn’t be so much hate in this world and we can joke about whatever we want.
I actually have mental health problems, I’m brunette, half scottish, half Irish and couldn’t give a monkey’s hole if someone wanted to call me a thick, tight retard with dark hair?!?!?. In fact, it would make me laugh hysterically. It’s all about HAVING A SENSE OF HUMOUR, not taking life or yourself too seriously and getting on with it. In my experience, it tends to be the people who don’t have a reason to offended who always are! I don’t feel I’m disciminated against coz I couldn’t give a toss what anyone else thinks.
I thought the picture ws adorably cute, made me laugh til my belly hurt and I know my other mental friends will feel the same when they see it. Congratulations to all the postees with the ability to raise the lips and crack a loud gaffaw, ain’t life fantastic! Big love to one and all xxxx
