People, look, seals are much smaller and do not have dexterious flippers AND are pretty clumsy on land. Sea lions have dexterious back flippers and front and can hold themselves up by the front flippers. That is not a walrus because it has no tusks, no defining whiskers.
It is technically an elephant seal. But it is and always will be the original lolrus!

Hah, yeah, the reason I always call it the “bucket saga” is because I really don’t think this is a walrus….
It’s actually a Southern Elephant Seal, the largest of of the walrus and seal family. This seal, Minazo, is from Japan and was well known for posing with a bucket.

It’s Minazo!
He was a very famous and beloved southern elephant seal from Japan. There are dolls, a picture book and even musical tributes dedicated to Minazo. On the cover of the first of the four album memorial to Minazo after he passed away in 95′ he his drawn rideing on a big puffy cloud with his bucket in fipper.
Yep, Amy, it’s Minazo.
He was made famous by the Japanese band Merzbow. The image you’re talking about was one of their album covers.

In nature, seals hang out with each other and seem to enjoy it. It is well documented (on wikipedia as well as elsewhere in this saga) that this particular southern elephant seal spent virtually all of his life alone.
While we enjoy this lolpic, let’s remember that this seal/lolrus had a very sad and lonely life and let’s try to do something so that gregarious animals in captivity can have pals to hang with.
