Why? I remember when there was a minor controversy – it lasted just a few months – about whether or not one should send pictures over the internet at all, because of the bandwidth it would take. Those were the days of baud rates and coloured boxes that did strange things to telephones. The autodialer on Wargames was state of the art back then. Now, it’s a ten-line subroutine that is so routinely called upon by commware that the very coders that make the comm software put it in without thinking about it.
Then came the formats, based on NASA’s work with exploration probes; I forget their names. Later we had the W3, with its jpeg, png, mp3 and others. The births of Google, eBay and Yahoo! are ancient history now, but it still feels new to me – and yet I’m not an old timer.
Three years. May as well be three days, but feels like a decade… Frankly, I like that about the speed of tech advancement. I’m a Wise Old One, though I’m still a kid. Thanks ICHC. Keep it up.
